I will be moving to the Memphis area in a few weeks and am very confused by the countless negative reviews about housing. I will be working in the distribution area ( Nike, phillips), and really need advice on a safe area to live. I'm a single mom with a high school age daughter. I am coming from California so I don't mind a commute if it's worth it. Is Collierville the best option or are there safe places closer to where I will be working to consider? Sorry if this post is similar to others, I'm looking for updated information.

Collierville is a good option, but Germantown is one city closer to Memphis (between Memphis and Cville). Great schools and great neighborhoods, etc. I would look at both.

You don't mention a budget. Olive Branch, MS may be a good option for you if Germantown and Collierville are too pricey for you.

Buying or renting? $2k can buy you a lot of house with what interest rates are these days...

Property tax for a $250k house in Collierville about $2,700. A little more in Germantown (maybe $2,900 or depending) and less in northern Mississippi.

Just to be clear, there are safe areas to live in Memphis, with the lowest-crime precinct being Downtown (we live there). That includes Mud Island, which is safe. There are other safe areas, too. The trickier part is finding safe areas with good public schools, especially on a budget.

At the beginning of the Memphis section here is a map with the areas colored in, to provide a guide to various neighborhoods. You can find online the test results for all schools and districts. The caveat is the recent changes in district names and boundaries, as well as upcoming changes noted in previous threads. Be sure to inquire from the school board in any area you are considering exactly which school your child would be districted for, and what optional programs might be available.

Germantown and Collierville are excellent choices, if they fit your budget and commute needs.

Is this high school that services downtown/ mud island a good school? What parameters are considered "east Memphis"? I have heard that area is also safe.

The only good public high school in Memphis is White Station, which is in East Memphis. And even there, only the optional program is good. There are lots of nice neighborhoods that have bad public schools, unfortunately. As far as East Memphis neighborhoods go, anything in 38120 is good. 38117 north of Park is good. 38117 south of Park isn't too bad either, but substantially less good than north side. A lot of 38119 is nice too, but quite a bit isn't and you kind of have to know which is which. In general for all of Memphis, the closer to Poplar, the better.

"In general for all of Memphis, the closer to Poplar, the better."

Except Downtown, where the jail, lots of bail bondsmen and social service agencies like drug rehab centers are on Poplar. The Downtown high school, BT Washington, would not be a good choice.
