Who remembers when Holiday Inn had its world headquarters in Memphis? It was on Lamar Avenue and the complex was known as "Holiday City".

At one time, HI had a partnership with Gulf Oil. Here is a Gulf station on Holiday City property.

This is the former HQ.

I never knew exactly where the headquarters was located. Do you know the story of Oakville? It's just up Lamar from the headquarters location, and just poking around Google Street View gives the appearance that it may have been an old community before being swallowed up by Memphis. It sure does look rough these days, though.

I knew that Holiday Inn had been headquartered in Memphis and that they had a presence on Lamar Avenue at one time in the past. However, it didn't hit me until just now what those old abandoned buildings on Lamar just north of Getwell were. Obviously, that must have been "Holiday City".

i remember staying in their flagship hotel on the river downtown, i believe it was called "the rivermont" with a restaurant on the top. the place is a condo complex today!

i also remember the gulf credit cards could be used exclusively at the holiday inns and the exxon cards at ramada inns. (i had an exxon card and my best friend had a gulf card in college. on road trips, we would take turns paying and staying in style, at the time.)

There are many very wealthy folks here from the selling of Holiday Inns to Bass PLC. They really stuck it to Bass on that deal.
Sad though because I remember very well how nice that complex used to be and it is a run down dump now.

So is the surrounding area.

How long has Holiday City been abandoned? What tenants (if any) moved in after Holiday Inn moved out?

Pretty much. It is unfortunately located today, as it is sandwiched between a cluster of motels/hotels that (illegally) rent rooms by the hour, which has exacerbated a long-standing prostitution problem on Lamar. Also, the strip club that is literally 100 yards or so down the street isn't helping. I am sure that neither of those things existed on Lamar when Holiday Inn located there.
