How bad are the bugs (especially Palmetto bugs), spiders, snakes and any other pests in Memphis? I lived there a year while finishing my degree at UM and had Palmetto bugs a few times in my apartment in Germantown, but that was an apartment with a lot of trees around. I had them very frequently in Houston and have had none in the Upper Midwest (currently in St. Louis and have had a few). This time I would be looking for new construction housing in Collierville. Could be a deal breaker in whether or not to consider Memphis. I hate these things.

We just call 'em roaches here I've lived here all my life and never had them in any of my homes. I imagine apartments would be much more susceptible to those guys since you have so many people in such close proximity...and your neighbors may keep their apartment as clean as you.

Snakes aren't a problem unless your property includes a good habitat for them.

Spiders. I hate 'em.....and I don't really care to learn which ones are beneficial and which aren't. I just want all of 'em dead. They aren't a major problem, but we still have the bug man spray our house every 3 months...

As long as you're having your house sprayed and entry points are sealed up, you should be fine. If you can see light coming through the door frame, you'll probably have a bunch of critters coming in. We have our house sprayed every 3 or 4 months, and we don't see any roaches or spiders running around. Putting a little glue board behind the furniture in each room will also eliminate a lot of bugs and spiders because they generally like to walk the edges of a room.

This isn't my lovely house with the blue carpet, but this is the type of trap we hide behind furniture. Critters try to walk through it or hide in it and get stuck.

Roof rats can be a problem if you have a lot of trees near a house. They will chew on the house and gain entry to the attic when it's cold outside. Again, you need to have entry points sealed up. I haven't noticed any issues with snakes, but if I had a Kingsnake or other non-venomous snakes in my yard, I would leave them. They get rid of other pests.

It gets below freezing enough here that we don't get *some* of the critters you'd find closer to the gulf. Keep your home clean and you shouldn't have too much trouble. Mosquitoes can be bad outside in the summer, but that's true with most of the Eastern US. It's also smart to be mindful of deer when driving outside the 240 loop.
