Any suggestions on where to go for a fun night out while we're down there this weekend? We want to go to a casino, any suggestions?

The casinos are about 30-45 minute away, just FYI. I'd go to the Gold Strike/Horseshoe/Sheraton area, then you can walk to all 3 at once.

Otherwise, just go downtown, day or night.

Just wanted to add that I live in Arlington and it's an awesome place to have a family and raise kids. I really don't like it when someone who does not have direct knowledge of a place tries to offer advice - just fyi, there AREN'T a lot of older houses or farm houses around, as this area has boomed over the last five years. Mostly all are new houses and starting around 150's for a starter house (3 br/2 ba/2 car garage/ lots around .25 acre). Most homes are in the 200's, especially any being built now. It has a brand new high school, an overcrowded (for now) elementary, and a relatively new middle school. All are very, very good schools. Parent involvement here is huge. This is really a family area and growing greatly, in good directions. So far, commercial development is such that the small town feel has been retained. For nights out, entertainment, great dining - we head in to Memphis, downtown, etc. which is roughly 30 minutes out. pm me if you want more info!

oh, one more thing! Be careful about making sure that the house you look at is actually IN arlington. I have seen several houses that are actually in the Memphis city limits but near Lakeland (which has the same 38002 zip code as Arlington) or houses that were actually in Fayette county (not shelby like Arlington, but near) list as being "in Arlington". remember that the zip code does not ensure your house is actually in Arlington, which can make a huge difference in your property value and school zoning. So please double check!!

I looked back and couldn't find anything mentioned about farm land. Who was offering advice and didn't have direct knowledge?

BTW - the OP said they have a horse and need land. TO me, that does not scream "new subdivision of starter homes."

i was trying to give them an accurate picture of what the town is from someone who lives there. i am sorry you were seemingly offended or took it in an unintended way, for whatever reason.

Okay, so we went down & spent the weekend and are back and it was very nice. The area we were in is by the hotels & shopping, I think it's called Cordova. Anyways, I can't remember the name of the road, somewhere near Germantown road. I was a little surprised that the people there didn't seem as friendly as say Nashville, but then we all have bad days. We had a good time, and our realtor took us to a LOT of development homes, it seems that's the majority there. They are very nice though, but the yards aren't really that big & no one plants anything there!! I'm used to trees & shrubbery, not there. And, we noticed, that a lot of the areas, you would be driving down the road and see a big nice house, then a shack right next door.

That must have been a zero-lot line or PUD area. Most homes in Cordova have nice sized lots as well as some beautiful landscaping. Was this one of those neighborhoods that seemed to be driveways as far as the eyes could see?

Your last sentence might be true in the city limits of Memphis, especially Midtown. However, I have never seen this in Cordova. Cordova has a majority of "planned neighborhoods" in the sense that one builder builds everything in the area. So, you won't see a big home next to a tiny shack.

Not sure what all should be planted and blooming...it snowed this weekend! Maybe if you visit during the spring things will be different.

I can't remember your initial question, but remember that Cordova is mostly part of Memphis now - not it's own city, not a suburb.

In areas in the Cordova that aren't completely developed, there are sometimes very nice homes next to very small, older homes that aren't in great shape. This is particularly common in the areas that were rural until very recently - i.e., Dexter Road area, off of Houston Levee in the Berryhill Area and further out Macon Road towards Eads. In the planned neighborhoods, there is typically a minimum of shrubbery - usually only what the builders have put in.
