Midland isn't bad in terms of crime, but that whole neighborhood between the U of M and Highland is full of college students and frat houses. I'd imagine that it gets pretty crazy and loud on the weekends.

Just as an FYI -- The top performing Applebee's in the entire US (as of 2006, at least) is the one on Union in Midtown.

Further, THE PLACE TO BE in Midtown for some two decades was TGI Friday's. It closed a few years ago and has been lamented by many, many Midtown folks.

Sigh. The insults directed at people in the suburbs is indicative of the disease Memphis suffers. People who choose to hurl such insults are part of the problem.

i go to uofm and i personally wouldn't live anywhere near campus unless i could afford to live on that northern side others have mentioned. Campus is actually in a nice area, but just blocks over your getting into a not so nice part of town. Downtown/midtown is great for young people. So many little fun places hidden in the area, I love it! Can be affordable, check out alot of places, LOOK FOR SPECIALS. I checked a ton of places before i found the right one. also go in person, internet can be decieving... GOOD LUCK!

I am originally from Memphis, TN and my husband and I are thinking about moving back to Memphis. I haven't lived in Memphis in years. I am looking at homes in the Memphis Country Club area, Buntyn, and High Point Terrace. Are these still good areas? I also like the Evergreen district and Cooper young.

About where to live in Memphis...

Don't buy a house until you have been here for a while.

Neighborhoods can change rapidly and it helps to actually know the area to have an idea about where is coming up and where is going down. If you lived here before, accept that you will need to relearn much of what you knew.

There are many areas that most people don't know about that you may love.
Sometimes you just kind of have to be lucky to find them or in the know.

And a lot depends on what you want.

There are areas in which you can get a whole lot of house for the money.
There are areas that will be increasing in value.
There are areas in good school districts.
However, the trick is to find all the things you are looking for in one house.
And it is not easy.

Personally, I want peace, quiet and privacy and a home with some individuality.
And it took a while, but I found it.
The thing is that finding my niche took time and study and a lot of looking.

Any of midtown can be very good, or very bad. But overall these are okay areas of Memphis and have a variety of housing options.
