The main negative to Mud Island as others have said is the isolation and lack of amenities. The main thing missing downtown is a grocery store. I can't even think of a small one in that area.

Miss Cordelia's grocery and deli is on the island. It's a smaller, sort of specialty grocery store. Not a place you'd do bulk shopping, but it has what you need in a pinch.

With Servicemaster moving downtown, I would not be surprised if more amenities popped up. Of course, that part of downtown is not convenient to the island at all, but it should definitely help improve the area.

I lived in Kirby Station and never had any problems. Sometimes people's cars got broken into, but that's the worst thing I heard of. Personally, I'd say just don't leave anything in your car that could be enticing.

These are the grocery store I can think of downtown:

City Market | MEMPHIS, TN 38103

Grocery | Miss Cordelia's Grocery

And of course, the weekly Memphis Farmer's Market: Memphis Farmers Market | The Memphis Farmers Market

I wouldn't be surprised if a new store moves into the South Main area or southern downtown area sooner than later. However, it's definitely not a "Kroger" neighborhood -- more people are buying groceries on a daily basis, using the farmer's market, or supporting a CSA, than buying bulk pasta at the supermarkets. Or, maybe they're making a once-a-month trip to Kroger or Costco.

I moved to Memphis one year ago and was in much of the same position. After much back and forth, I decided on Mud Island. I could not be happier with my decision. Yes, it is a bit of a drive for shopping, etc but I have never felt unsafe--- huge in Memphis. My husband also travels overnight a good bit and I work from home but have day time travel 2-3 x per week.

There is a community feel to Mud Island, with residents ranging from post graduate students pursing a medical degree to retirees who downsized homes. Miss C's is 2 minutes from my apartment and has a good selection with a great deli. The island has a dry cleaners, nail salon and gym. Paulette's and The River Inn are both upscale restaurants and boutique hotels. A new downtown Kroger is slated to open soon. It takes us 15 minutes to drive to the fun restaurants and bars in Midtown.

The crime rate in Memphis is high (as I am sure you realize) so safety was a big factor in my decision. While there are some sketchy areas around, Mud Island itself is quite safe. I don't regret my decision at all and highly recommend living on Mud Island. Good luck with your move!

Really? I haven't seen or heard anything about this, but that'd be great.

That Kroger is decidedly in Midtown. That's, like, the heart of Midtown.

There's no Kroger downtown - there is one on Poplar at Cleveland (not a great area) in midtown, and also one that will reopen next year on Union, again, in midtown. Both quite a drive away, at least if you are thinking of a "quick trip to the store."

Quite a drive? Hmmm. Google Maps says Union/Front intersection to Idlewild Presbysterian (across from new Kroger) is 3 miles and 10 minutes. Yes, it's not a downtown grocery. But it's not that far. Folks drive much longer to work every day, so I doubt anyone would complain that a store they go to once a week is two neighborhoods over.
