Now you understand why people like to give full disclosure on these forums when someone is considering moving to the city. It's certainly not for everyone, and I do have sympathy for your position.

However, I think it's a bit unfair to insinuate that this city is all people know, and that's the only reason they can tolerate it. But I hope you are able to be back to a place in which you feel safer soon.

Sorry, you have had poor experience. I'm a native a Memphian who was somewhat bitter to having to move back to take care of a family situation. But I will tell anyone that it is not New York, but Memphis for "if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere". Many people can't cut it, but those who can will excel anywhere in the world with ease when/if they decide to leave Memphis.

Sorry you're having a tough time adjusting. I just spent several days in Christmas in Montgomery County, Maryland, so I have a sympathetic place for you, but the reality is Memphis is what it is due to very specific and somewhat unique circumstances. Perhaps learning more about the history of the city will allow you to approach living there with more understanding, if not more enjoyment.

I would also encourage you to get involved as much as possible. Livable Memphis, United Way, Community Foundation, St. Jude. Go to the Civil Rights museum, or the cotton exchange. Take a weekend and explore the Mississippi Delta region as a whole.
