I am inquiring about the Shelby County, Tennessee, grocery retailing market.

Memphis is the origin of supermarket Piggly Wiggly, founded in 1916 as the earliest notable self-service grocery store.

Supermarket
  • Kroger
  • Walmart Neighborhood Market
Hypermarket
Walmart Supercenter

Specialty organic/gourmet grocery
  • The Fresh Market
  • Sprouts Farmers Market
Wholesale Club
  • Costco
  • Sam's Club
Limited assortment/discount grocery
  • Aldi
  • Save-A-Lot
Coming soon
  • Hypermarket Kroger Marketplace in Arlington
  • Specialty organic/gourmey grocery retailer Trader Joe's in Germantown
As Kroger Marketplace and Trader Joe's are coming to Shelby County, I wonder if additional grocery retailing participants will enter the market.

Lakeland, Florida-based supermarket Publix recognized Memphis as a potential market in 2012, but it had no plans to enter at that time. (Douglas, Andrew. "Grocery chains may be considering moving to Memphis." WMC-TV. 23 February 2012.) Publix has opened a distribution center in McCalla, Alabama, and Interstate 22 and Interstate 269 in Tennessee and Mississippi should be completed by 2018. Out of 1,142 stores and 1,031 in-store pharmacies, 40 stores all with in-store pharmacies are in Tennessee.

There are also one Super Target hypermarket in Cordova and two Whole Foods, one in East Memphis and one in Germantown.

I overlooked specialty organic grocer Whole Foods Market.

Publix is opening its McCalla, Alabama, distribution center on Wednesday, 22 February. Approximately twenty stores in Tennessee will be supported by the distribution center. Stores in the Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin, Tennessee Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Clarksville, Tennessee-Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area are likely to be served by McCalla Distribution. If Publix expands to Memphis, its stores would be served by McCalla Distribution also.

There are actually 31 stores in the Nashville-Clarksville area. Here's hoping Publix will expand into the Memphis area soon.

Publix's presence in Clarksville with two stores, with a third store possible, should be a springboard to enter Kentucky.

Publix has several markets in Tennesee where it needs to enter (Cookeville, Jackson, Johnson City, Kingsport, Maryville, Oak Ridge) and where it needs to further expand in additional stores (Hamilton County, Knox County).

Some markets in Georgia (Americus, Blairsville, Blue Ridge, Chatsworth, Clayton, Cleveland, Cornelia, Dalton, Ellijay, Fort Oglethorpe, Hinesville, Jasper, Milledgeville, Ringgold, Statesboro, Toccoa, Waycross) do not have Publix. I could see Publix's Atlanta and Jacksonville divisions entering these markets.

If Publix were to expand into Shelby County today, where could it open stores?

Looks like Publix may choose to infill more stores in the state of Tennessee. In addition to Nashville, they also have stores in Knoxville and plans for Bristol. Although the Bristol store may be planned for the Virginia side. And as mentioned, Johnson City is part of that region. With the new distribution center, Memphis may be a next logical move. And indeed Kentucky could be next for consideration. Competitors in Kentucky include Kroger, Walmart, and Meijer Supercenter stores. Is there room for Publix in the future?

I'm not sure what you are asking exactly. Are you asking what areas are currently underserved in groceries? Excluding very poor areas that may not be able to support a supermarket, Downtown comes to mind. The whole Poplar corridor has the most money in town, but it's also already very well served by many supermarkets. Germantown Parkway in Cordova seems to be able to absorb businesses ad infinitum. Maybe one up that way in the Wolfchase area.

Publix also opened in Greeneville, signaling a desire to infill in smaller markets in more densely populated East Tennessee.

I'd think Publix would be looking first at East Memphis, Germantown, Collierville, North MS, and Arlington/Lakeland. Kroger anticipated this and remodeled their existing stores and are opening some new stores as well.

There are not any other supermarkets in Shelby County beyond Kroger and Walmart Neighborhood Market since Schunck's exited in 2011. Schnuck's stores were previously Sessels stores acquired from Albertson's in 2002. Kroger acquired several Schnuck's stores.

I would say there is room for another supermarket participant in Shelby County.

The question is "Where could Publix open stores in Shelby County?"

Kroger must have several stores along the Poplar Avenue corridor.
