The Southland Mall opened in 1966, when Whitehaven was a separate community (Memphis annexed it in 1970). My family and I would go there in the 1970s, before the Mall of Memphis and Hickory Ridge Mall opened. Both of them are gone, as is the Raleigh Springs Mall. Yet Southland is still in business.

I grew up in Whitehaven, my friends and I would ride our bikes to the Southland Mall to hang out. Sometimes, we would head across the street to the Southbrook Mall to catch a new movie.
