Do any of the suburbs east of Memphis resemble Plano?

As the market crashes I am considering a move to a cooler climate and lower cost of living area.

Collierville or Piperton or even German town similar to Plano?

My wants are close to great medical specialists, nearby conveniences for daily living like good variety of grocery stores. Good restaurants nearby for take out. Safe matters too.

I know some have a crime concern about Memphis metro but I suspect like any place there are pockets that are very safe

I like diversity and the options a large city has but prefer being in suburbs at this time of my life in retirement. The locations I have lived in most recently (last 40 years) are DFW, Houston and NYC metro,.

Thanks in advance

I lived in Dallas for a few years in the 80s. Not sure any of these areas remind me of Texas. Not too familiar with Piperton as it's fairly new and building up. But Germantown would be my top choice. It has the best access to stores and restaurants. Also it is next to Cordova which to me has the highest ratio of restaurant and shopping variety in the city along Germantown road.

I clicked on this thread because I have gotten DFW metro "vibes" in Memphis' eastern suburbs. It's greener and the trees are larger, but the houses look very similar in many places. As such there are a lot of the "big roof" 1980s and 1970 faux-lonial ranchers. Streets are somewhat similar but there's more curves than the straight, six-lane divided thoroughfares you find in Plano. Ample sidewalks like you find in the whole DFW suburban area. Plus, there are many self-contained neighborhoods with 50-100 homes off the major streets. Very similar and that's because the land is flatter in that part of the state. One thing you'd notice right off is how much cheaper property taxes are in TN.

If that is important to you please do a lot of deep research, make as many valid comparisons between Memphis and Plano as you can. Many years ago I moved from Houston to Memphis expecting it to be pleasantly cooler simply because it was further north, much to my great disappointment I found it wasn't so.
On my next move I used everything from weather history websites, to gardening zone microclimate maps to NOAA info to avoid making the same mistake.

I took a cursory glance at some recent weather history for both cities, which didn't seem to show consistently cooler summer temps for Memphis. Summer in Memphis can start as early as late April and extend to September and beyond.

Yes, Germantown and Collierville are similar type suburbs to Plano. They are safe and well organized and with plenty of stores. For weather, climate-charts.com has average temperature by the month. The main difference is in the winter when Memphis on average is about 7 degrees colder than the Dallas area. Fall starts a couple of weeks earlier and spring starts a couple of weeks later.

The area of east Memphis near the Germantown border, Germantown, and Collierville combined have about 100,000 people, so it's large enough to get your daily needs met.

Neighboring DeSoto County, Mississippi is another option in the Memphis area. DeSoto County has home sizes and lots sizes of all types, but many people there live on large, multi-acre lots with more space between the houses or along tree-lined country roads. DeSoto County currently is the fastest growing part of the Memphis metropolitan area. This includes the towns of Hernando, Southaven, and Olive Branch. This area has about 150,000 people.

I am originally from Memphis and have lived in Plano as recently as 5 years ago. I guess if I had to compare any suburbs east of Memphis to Plano, it would be Germantown or Collierville, but even then, they are more like 80s or 90s Plano than present day Plano...

Memphis is not COOLER than Houston, but it is definitely LESS HUMID than Houston, which does make a difference as far as heat goes.

Seems that nights in Memphis are slightly less humid and uncomfortable, but I don't see enough of a difference during the day to make much distinction, not enough to be worth moving for IMO.

I appreciate all the replies. I find it meet my needs should we decide to move.

The weather comments match my expectations, slightly cooler than plano but if that was the only reason to move clearly not enough difference. I had grandparents living in Lewisburg and lived in Pittsburgh 2 years and it’s way too cold for us not to mention we did not like living there at all. So at some point going north I might find better weather but have tried to fall in love with Lexington but not happening yet.

I think any of the 3 I mentioned would work well for us and COL in home price and taxes to make i yes to it attractive. To move it will take a triggering event.

I’m drawn to Eads area too but just too far from conveniences at this life stage.

I am surprised to see so much responses on this thread. Let me know if I can help anyone as you all have me.

Lived in Memphis for over 5 years and did a project in DFW recently. You're not going to get the "big" city amenities that the metroplex provides and it's worth noting many of the interesting things to do in Memphis are primarily centered around hot beds of crime.

Lower cost of living/traffic may be the only benefits which I can totally understand are huge for many in the later stages of life.
