I am driving across the country to accurately depict the life of students in some of America's worst school districts. I am sure Memphis, like every major city, has schools that fit the criteria of "dilapidated" and "run down".

Can anyone point me in the right direction of specific schools in Memphis that will best fit my endeavor?

Go to a list of Memphis City Schools.

Pick any of them.

Seriously though, if you are talking high schools...pick any of them other that maybe White Station or Ridgeway. Manassass, maybe Westside/Westwood (whatever it is called), Mitchell...

Thank you for your reply... I know this question is definately supplemented with subjective answers, so I really want to know out of the few you suggested, which is the worse of them?

Again thanks for your reply, this is much appreciated!

I don't know how to differentiate between bad and real bad. Go online and look the stats up for the school system and you could probably see for yourself. Pick the graduation rate as your point of reference.

As bad as the city schools are, I'm not sure that any of the buildings currently in use are considered dilapidated. At least not the parts you can see from the streets. The neighborhoods around some of them are another story.

Well, unless White Station has done some repairs over the last few years it might fit the criteria. It does look okay from the street but considering the school's reputation, I was actually shocked at the physical condition of the school the first time I entered it. There are probably schools in worse condition but WSHS does/did have problems with mold, disintegrating ceiling tiles, just generally run down and dingy looking, especially in the basement classrooms. Because of overcrowding, what used to be an old abandoned elementary school on the property, that was closed and used for storage, was reopened and some classes are held there.

Treadwell School might be one to look at if you are talking about outward appearances. It always makes me feel depressed when I drive by, it just looks so bleak. It's just a series of ugly boxes plopped down in the middle of an empty field. No architectural interest at all, no trees, lots of asphalt, ughh! At least some of the other schools have a pretty campus.

Oh, I was thinking "run down" more like the student body, not the actual building.

Central High is old, as is East High.

I always thought East High was such a pretty building, at least from the outside, as is Snowden, and some of the other older schools. The new(ish) sports field at East is really nice too. I got the impression the OP was looking more for an urban blight type scenario? Across the street from East High ... that's a whole 'nother story, that is one ugly stretch of road there.
