I just called a Salon on Perkins and told me that they price their haircuts according to "thickness" of hair, and quantity (she did not mention difficulty or anything else).

I have never heard of such notion. Is this common in Memphis?

That sounds like something that might apply to african-american hair. Of course, maybe you are black, I have no clue Adjusting the price based on hair type, or semi-permanent styling of AA hair, sounds like something that would apply more to black people than those who have more naturally fine/straight hair. Since Memphis, especially in city limits, is predominatly black, I would think it might have something to do with that.

Pearlbob may be right, or it could have something to do with hair thickness if it has been awhile since the last cut and to style it takes longer?
Just a guess,
Pam

I've heard of very long hair being difficult to work with and costing more for some procedures, but thick hair? I have very thick hair that has to be thinned frequently, and I have never had to pay extra for any procedures at any salon I have ever been to.

Yikes, I've not heard of that, although I've run into alot of things down south that I didn't deal with in Illinois. My hair is super duper thick, and I haven't gone for a cut yet. I'll be curious to know what happens when I go. ugh...maybe it's just the salon??? even so, it sounds odd.

I am quite positive it is based on your ethnicity and type of hair. I have never heard this before in Memphis and I've lived here a long time.

I am not African American, and it should not matter what I am.

Pricing must not be based on enthnicity--it is discriminatory. I simply asking for the price of a haircut (no additional processes or anything).

Well...in their defence, if african american hair is harder to work on (which it is) then it makes sense that they charge more. Just like they charge more to work on a Ferrari vs a Honda Some things just require extra care. It's not discrimination, it's just that if it takes 4 hours to cut, braid, style, etc a black woman's hair, they it makes sense to charge more. I mean, if she asked you "are you black? okay then your haircut will be more expensive." Then yes, that isn't right. But she simply asked what thickness and quantity of hair you have. That could be for white people too, however in Memphis, being 70% black, I would imagine they are assuming it to be directed towards black people.

Well, if it were the deep south, she would have said something much worse making sure you were white This is just an urban, predominantly black area. My hair takes 10 minutes to cut. I've had black friends go to the salon for 4 hours each week to get their hair done. If the stylist don't charge more for that, they are insane!
