Hi, I will be graduating from college in the spring and taking a job in Cordova, TN. I don't know anyone in the Memphis area and am single, and I don't know what would be the best area for me to live (in the city, suburbs like Germantown, Collierville, Cordova, etc). What is your advice for a young person moving to the area?

Depends on your likes and dislikes. Different parts of the city have a different "flavor". Midtown or Cooper-Young are completely different from Cordova. Germantown and Collierville are different from Cordova.

If you like older homes, quirky (but good) restaurants, plenty of bars and clubs - you're more of a Midtown or Cooper-Young person - maybe even downtown. If you like newer homes or apartments, shopping centers, clusters of national chain restaurants and maybe a mall, you're more of a Cordova type of person.

I personally would not recommend a young person to move to the suburbs, unless you specifically want that type of lifestyle. Family oriented, strip malls, not a lot of unique things to do. You like eating at Chili's and Applebee's? Move to Cordova!

Midtown and downtown are filled with younger people and have more variety for people of your age. The commute out to Cordova would be against traffic, therefore very quick morning and night.

The suburbs are probably going to be cheaper, at least cordova, than midtown or downtown- always a plus for someone just starting out.

My wife and I are young (25 y/o) with no children and we live in the Joffre Area, which is part of the University District. We love it and find it very convenient. I would think Midtown would be good, or the area around U of M. I personally would not recommend Cordova or any of the Eastern Suburbs until you are wanting to settle down...

Don't move there....The violent crime rates make that place one of the most undesirable places on the planet!

Stay away from living in the Suburbs unless you are married with children and enjoy franchise restaurants and rednecks.

Sorry guys, but cordova is not cool!

I dunno, Cordova might become the hip new place where young singles live. I'd rather see that than see it go the way of Hickory Hill. I know a lot of college students and recent college grads that live out in Cordova.

Cordova doesn't have an Applebee's. Midtown does, though, and according to the manager there, it has been one of the top performers in the entire chain for a decade. (We won't even discuss how TGI Friday's kept Overton Square alive for so long.)
