Hello all!
My husband and I are planning a trip to Memphis to the Orpheum for our anniversary. We are a young couple (late twenties). I have found a couple of places we might be interested in staying, and would love to hear your opinions, if any. I am looking at the River Inn of Harbor Town or the Talbot Heirs Guest House. Thanks for your comments!

This forum is more for living in Memphis. If you want travel advice, please seek out the Memphis forum on tripadvisor.com (for example). Members on there can provide you with plenty of info regarding traveling to Memphis.

I've never stayed at either, but I think I'd choose Talbot Heir's....if, for no other reason, the fact that it's a very short walk to the Orpheum, Beale Street, etc. River Inn isn't within walking distance of those.

My apologies, I have seen various travel info over on the Arkansas threads, so I asked. Thanks for the info!

I was just at the River Inn a few days ago. Great place. You can get out and walk through Harbor Town, which is safe and not as sketchy as the area around the Orpheum -- and both of the restaurants at the inn are great.

No problems, I just think the other website would give you more info from people who have stayed at hotels. Talbot Heirs is in the heart of downtown, and although I would figure it would be noisy, every review I have read states the contrary. You'd be able to walk to everything downtown easily. River Inn would not be walkable to anything downtown, unless you wanted a looong trek over the bridge and into downtown. A couple miles? It's a pretty area, and Harbortown is cute, but there is nothing there other than a nice river park, houses, apartments, and a couple small neighborhood restaurants and shops.

Oh, and the Orpheum is completely safe. It's right off Beale Street, on Main. Talbot Heirs would be a few minute walk, and you'd be walking the entire way with thousands of other people who live and visit downtown every night. 2 blocks down 2nd past a dozen great restaurants, a block up Beale to Main. Long city blocks, but it's basically right there. I can't imagine why anyone would come to Memphis to see a show at the Orpheum but then stay on the island and have to drive everywhere (and then pay to park downtown). I'm sure it's a great hotel, but as a visit to Memphis, I would always recommend staying downtown.
