Is it still owned by Belz? It is called Lakeland Outlet Mall on the Lakeland website. I also read on another site that many stores have left the mall. Is this true?

It's still there, although the last time I was there (many months ago) there were a lot of vacancies. Don't know if it's still owned by Belz or not....

Nope, it appears it is longer owned by Belz, but is owned by Gilad Development. Only a few stores remain open but is apparently undergoing redesign. I have fond memories of going to that mall while living in Bartlett. Hopefully, it will survive after redesign.

Lakeland Outlet Mall owners still plan redesign : Bartlett Cordova : Memphis Commercial Appeal

Memphis needs a real outlet mall, something like Prime Outlets or Premiere Outlets. Tennessee has both, but none near Memphis.

I remember going to that mall during its early years. It has never been fully occupied. It was just a really weird idea in the first place. The really successful outlet malls are--for the most part--outdoor malls, where people can park directly in front of or beside the store(s) that they want to visit. Lakeland's indoor outlet mall is going the way of all indoor malls; it's an outdated model. Did you know that there has not been an indoor mall built in the entire U.S. since late 2006 / early 2007? (IIRC, Jonesboro's new mall was the last one built. Figures. Jonesboro is behind on everything else. Why not this too?)

Anyway, last I heard, an investment and development group had their eyes on the Lakeland outlet mall site as a location for a new urbanist type neighborhood. We'll see what happens. Clearly, what's there now is not the 'highest and best use' of that property.

Yeah, indoor malls are no longer in vogue. Belz built a new outlet mall in Pigeon Forge and it is an outdoor style mall. Premiere Outlets and Prime Outlets are building only outdoor style malls, and a new one is opening next month here in Southwest Ohio. What is an urbanist neighborhood? I guess the outlet mall redesign is not moving forward then.

Indoor malls certainly have there advantages. I hate going to the outdoor "mall" when it's 98 degrees outside....or raining. It's fine of you're going to one particular store, but it's a PITA if you just want to wander around shopping at different stores unless the weather is really nice.

Besides, the term "outdoor mall" seems kinda silly....must have been thought up by someone with a marketing degree. Isn't that the same think as a "shopping center"? I suppose "outdoor just sounds more upscale....
