Are there any free or inexpensive activities for kids to do in and around Memphis? For like 8 - 12 years old

I think all of the museums off a free day once a week, usually in the afternoon. Call around and check. There is always something simple like going to Shelby Farms or Shelby Forrest.

The Zoo is free on Tuesdays after 2 for Tennessee residents. You just pay to park and then show your drivers license to get in.

Hot spots: Plenty of places in the Mid-South to visit at little or no cost : Travel : Memphis Commercial Appeal

The site www.midsouthmoms.com often has some interesting suggestions (I took a free self protection class last weekend that had been posted on their site and it was great!). Not everything is free, but you can click on the calendar and find a variety of things. And you can click on the box on the left to find out where kids can eat free (or at least at a discount).

Also, the Commercial Appeal had a list of stuff just the other day. Not necessarily free, but some may be worth checking out Hot spots: Plenty of places in the Mid-South to visit at little or no cost : Travel : Memphis Commercial Appeal.

Your kids might be a little too old, and it might be a little late in the summer season, but some of the people I work with regularly take their kids to the free projects offered on Saturdays at Home Depot, Lowe's, and Bass Pro.

Good luck.

Default Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh Card tournaments-kids games

If you are looking for FREE or minimum fee ($5.00) for things to do with kids, HobbyTown in the wolfchase area behind IHOP hosts Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh tournaments every saturday from 10-5pm. They even host Pre-release parties but the fee is a bit higher.
Check out facebook/Hobbytown memphis for all events going.
Its a great place to just visit and look around too if you need to kill some time.
