alisa517,

Most houses in Midtown have at least a half basement. If you just want to use it for storage or storm shelter, a half basement works fine.

Those are the 'fraidy holes I was talking about. There's an entire subdivision in Collierville with those.

Alisa,
Be careful about old houses with basements. I went to college in a small town in southeast Arkansas. One of the houses I lived in had a HUGE basement. After we moved out one of my 'friends' decided to tell me and the rest of the former occupants that the house was the old funeral home for the city. That explained all of the strange noises we kept hearing at night.

I'm not sure of the exact location. I think it was on or near Bahaylia Road. New subdivision with some very nice houses.

Hi, Well first off, welcome to Memphis. I restore houses in the Memphis area. There are not very many houses with basements in these parts. When I lived up North it was pretty much a given that you would have a basement in your house or townhouse. Not so here. Either people in these parts do not know how them in the south or our land is not suitable. Most basements here leak and are not fit to live in. If you look in the Mid town area you will find alot of older homes with unfinished basements. You might find a rental house in the Mid town area, buy you will probably will have to finish it out. Finished basements are just not easy to find here. I can't think of any townhouses that have basements.

I know of one house that has a nice finished basement, They hired someone that builds basements up North to build it. We just do not have alot of hills to dig them out of and our soil different. It does seem at one time they did build basements around here. Check out the Mid town area, in the 100 year plus homes.
