Coming in town for a job interview downtown on Tuesday and will be staying one night. Never been to Memphis so I don't know anything about the area or what parts I should avoid. Just looking for a cheap hotel that's not too far (15 minutes or so) from downtown. Any suggestions?

The cheapest thing you're going to find near Downtown (that's not run-down) is the Gen X Inn (now the 'Best Western Gen X Inn'). I checked online, and you can book a room online for $76 + tax. To find anything cheaper than that, you'll have to look in an area a bit further away from Downtown. If you're coming from the west, look at West Memphis (a hellhole); from the east, look at Sycamore View; from the south, look at Southaven; from the north, look in Millington.

Welcome and enjoy the city.

If the interview is downtown, I'd suck it up and pay a higher price. You could walk to the interview, which may be easier than having to drive downtown, park in a garage, and then walk to the building (you didn't mention where it was exactly).

Sleep Inn is probably the cheapest nice hotel right downtown that is walkable to things.

Safety is another big concern. I don't want to end up in a bad area. I've seen some affordable nice looking hotels in Olive Branch. Is this an okay area?

That's fine. May I also suggest the Holiday on Union Ave. Not the one across from the Peabody downtown but a few ways up the street. Might also want to check the Holiday Inn on the University of Memphis campus.

The area of Olive Branch is fine, but that's further than 15 minutes from downtown. Give yourself more time to commute.
