This is a very intriguing and enlightening article about Memphis' "indie" scene nightlife, in the NY Times. The link is below:

Next Stop - An Indie Music Scene in Midtown Memphis - NYTimes.com

I may have to come down and check Memphis out.

Great article! Jessielou, too bad I live so far away. This is my scene. I was heartbroken when the World Grotto closed in Knoxville.

Thumbs up Thanks for sharing.............

Had heard and read a few things about various clubs, but never an article that put it all together............... IMO Memphians tend not to appreciate their own 'homegrown' talents very much until they make it big somewhere else.........Nice informative article.......

thanks for the link jjbrad.

however, as i feared, there was a mention of jay reatard. perhaps when you spend time IN the scene instead of just being a tourist, your view gets warped. reatard was just another midtown junkie to me that bought stepped on herion from the e.army guys. i find nothing cool or hip about shooting up behind the hi-tone.
yes, my city has some incredible late nite dive bars. but these places thrive on creative types who drink to much and do a lot of drugs. yeah, it is a great inviting scene...for a weekend. try living in it. it isn't nearly as friendly as the writer would lead one to believe, nor is it very diverse. most of the people there are white, middle class up-bringings, 22-35, self-important,and for some reason that baffles me to this day, love garage rock. be a punk in this city. be a goth. (and i mean a real goth..whatever an edwardian goth is, i do not know, but a real goth craves industrial and the cramps, ministry, not another party full of house techno and drum and bass. those are not goth or ebm or industrial.) walk into one of those places as a loca punk or goth, and the hipster wall of silence is all you'll notice...unless you have better drugs and want to share.
