Hi there -- I will probably be moving to Memphis in early-mid March to pastor a church there. It's just me (a single middle-age woman) and a wonderful medium-sized dog who is very clean and well behaved. (I take her to shut ins and nursing homes.) I'm looking for a small house or condo with a small fenced yard. Any suggestions of good neighborhoods or realtors? Other suggestions on where to look and what to avoid? Thanks!

Check out the Joffre neighborhood. It's just west of the U of M.

Yes. Joffree neighborhood. East-West streets are Midland/Central/Poplar. North-South streets are Reese/Alexander/Palisade/Holmes/Greer/Prescott (couple others I can't remember). Very nice homes built between about 1920 and 1945 with square footage between 1000-1700sq ft. Price ranges probably between $130k and $200k. The yards are plenty big too.

High Point Terrace area is nice. It's north of the UofM near the Galloway Golf Course at the intersection of High Point Terrace and Walnut Grove Rd. It's where some of my UofM professors live.

There are lots of small houses and condos in Memphis. You want a place that is in a safe area with things to do in walking distance (for you and when you want to walk your dog) I'm thinking, right? Contact me directly and I can help you. There are several condos that I would look at if I were you but condos always have those monthly maintenance fees. What do you like to do in your free time (mall shop, museums, coffee shops, theatre, parks) since that helps to narrow down neighborhoods.

I agree with all here. Check out High Point and Joffre. You may also be able to get something a little cheaper in Normal Station, which is just south of the University (north of Park, South of Southern, west of Goodlett).

I lived in that neighborhood and loved it. I renovated an old WW2 cottage and had wonderful neighbors.

However, there was an awful lot of petty theft and break-ins when I was there. One neighbor came home from work early to find some random teenagers eating pizza from her fridge (it was the first day of summer vacation). Another neighbor had her mail stolen a few times before getting a locked mailbox. Another neighbor's garden shed was broken into and lawn mower stolen. Another neighbor's car was stolen from her driveway. My house was broken into three times--twice after I got an alarm system. And more than once I'd be at my kitchen window and see random teenagers walk down my driveway from my back yard towards the street (and I had a fenced-in back yard).

On the bright side, the Memphis police were quick to respond and very professional. And in spite of all the crime, I really did enjoy living there and was sad to leave Memphis.

Here's another area that should be mentioned >>> Colonial Acres/Yorkshire

Park Avenue to the North

Perkins Road to the West

Willow Road to the South

Estate Road to the East

Very nice homes in a very stable neighborhood
