We are moving to the Memphis area and we think that we would like to build in Collierville. We have heard that they only options for building a house in Collierville is a 4,000 square foot $400,000 home. We were thinking around the 2,500 square foot $270,000 range. Does anybody have any neighborhood ideas or suggestions on where to start? We have talked to a realtor, but she pushed the idea of buying a pre-existing structure and hasn't gotten back to us.

Collierville is a very expensive area now. It would not surprise me if they are not building homes for that small there. Try looking around at building websites and contacting multiple realtors in the area.

The realtor is right. You can buy a pre-existing home in Collierville in your price range. If you want new, you will have to go to Cordova, Bartlett, or Arlington. Maybe Lakeland but the prices in Lakeland for new homes have sky-rocketed as well.
