there are numerous hotels and motels, all w/in 20-30 minutes of graceland. i would recommend the doubletree hotel on sanderlin. it is near the racquet club, clark tower, whole foods, houston's restaurant, the half shell, all types of fast food establishments, belmont grill, etc. you would be in east memphis, but you would be close to graceland, which is south memphis. it is rather uncomplicated to drive to graceland from the sanderlin hotel destination. you should have no difficulty finding e. p. blvd. when you are finished at graceland, go south, get on 240 perimeter to downtown, decide on which bridge you wish to use across the mississippi, and head west toward little rock.

The Doubletree on Sanderlin as suggested by kingchef is in the same neighborhood as the Hampton on Poplar that you were asking about earlier. If this is the part of town you decide on, I'd compare prices online and book whichever has the best rate. Nearby you'll also find a Courtyard by Marriott (Park and Ridgeway area), Holiday Inn Select (Poplar and I-240), and a few others. Any of these should be fine.

I agree, that Hampton Inn looks pretty nice. I wouldn't stay in Germantown, honestly, because if you plan on leaving in the morning, your commute into Memphis and then through it is going to be horrible. Stay kind of in the city, drive around, go down to Graceland...it's a nice place.

one thing that might have some bearing on your decisions is this burial and motorcade for the man that died recently here in memphis. he was an officer or administrator for the united negroes organization. i happened to hear something about his burial being at elmwood cemetery. that cemetery is very close to your destination outing. it might, depending on the time, cause some traffic problems on the blvd. traffic in memphis is really not a problem; however, i just thought you might want a heads up. hope everything works out well for you all and you enjoy your stay. tennesseans have always, out of respect for the dead and the family, stop, if possible, or pull to the side of the road, as the hearse, family, and funeral procession pass. now, others may tell you not to do that on a 5-7 lane blvd, but you most likely will see that---even those who don't stop usually slow at least until the hearse and family are past. i am sure you will make the right decision, if you find yourself in this situation.

His name is Benjamin Hooks and he was as fine a man as Memphis has ever produced.

Anyway, I'd recommend the Hampton Inn at Stage (Hwy 64) and Germantown Parkway. It is convenient to I-40, close to dining, and in Bartlett right across from the Wolfchase Mall. There are also a couple of places at the Hwy 64 exit off I-40 (I can't remember what exactly) that would be nice, close to dining, and shouldn't be crazy high in price.

If ya'll are like me, when traveling I look for a hotel that is nice, in a safe area, and close to the interstate. The ones on Poplar meet all the above needs except they are on the 240 loop that would be out of your way going from Nashville to Plano. Now if seeing Graceland is something you want to do, I'd say those areas would be good. They are close enough without being too close (the Graceland neighborhood isn't that great) and sit in some of the priciest real estate in Memphis. There is also a pretty nice La Quinta Inn off Poplar near 240 that I have recommended to friends and they were happy with.

So, travel ease or Graceland? Whichever choice you make, you will be fine. I can't guarantee no problems (hotels attract thieves everywhere and no where is 100% safe), but I'd have no problem recommending either area to someone visiting Memphis.

kingchef, you really should do a google Mr. Hooks. he is one of the last of a group of men (AND WOMEN) who were dedicated to not only equality, but PEACEFUL change. please, do a google!!!! and while us civilans may still do the country pull over out of respect for the dead thing, our cops are busy crashing into themselves while escorting the hearse!!!

kayk, it maybe a bit late to tell you, but have you checked out the prices to tour graceland??? most locals have never been and i'm firmly convinced our lack of visiting is due to two things...the surrounding neighborhood is pretty scary if you aren't used to memphis AND the admission prices EPE wants.
one the best FREE things you can see isnt far from poplar and I-40....the crystal grotto located in the Memorial Park! it was built in the 1930s.it is almost as glittery as those jump suits!
Crystal Shrine Grotto, Memphis, Tennessee or just a google of 'memphis crystal grotto' will get you several links on it.

Thanks all, for your info and input.
Tell him about the car museum. That should get his attention

When I was a teenager me and my gf would sneak into the crystal grotto and uh, shall we say wrestle. She sure was a good wrestler, but I would always win. I guess you could say I would pound her into submission

IS anyone famuiliar with the AAE Vista Inn and Hostel near the ballpark downtown? I'm also thinking of stopping in Memphis early June. I'll be travelling on a 30 day Greyhound bus pass and I've just booked 3 nights at the Bourbon Street Hostel in New Orleans. After that I'm gonna spend the4 day in Jackson MS and possibly head to Memphis to spend a few nights. Just like the original poster I'd like to know the best are'as to spend time exploring and if the Hostel I mentioned is located in a safe area and if there is much for me to see there.

Thanks

Heres the address 265 Union Ave, Memphis, TN 38103

Fortunately it looks as thoe it's only a 1 minute walk from Greyhound.
