What would be your suggestion for a hotel in Memphis? We don't know the area and have read on here that many areas are high crime areas. Any suggestions for a hotel in a reasonably good area?

It would be helpful to know what you are coming to Memphis for (for example, if you're coming for Memphis in May, you don't want to be all the way out in Germantown).

I was just going to say the same thing. There are plenty of safe hotels in the area, we just need to know what you're coming for.

We would be just spending the night on the way back to Texas from Nashville. So location doesn't matter except the safety issue and it will be next week.

I have heard that the downtown area is probably the safest. Unfortunately, it appears rather pricey. That actually is not such a big issue to my husband & I (within reason!) but we are traveling with a young lady from our church who likely doesn't have the funds for something outrageously expensive.

Downtown is safe, but depending on when you're coming, it could be hard to find a room (i.e. the first weekend in May...). Midtown, my neighborhood, is really safe but doesn't have that many hotels. Your best bet would probably be further East...there is a nice area out on Poplar where Poplar meets the interstate. By a lot of restaurants, a Target, etc.

Default Hilton?

There is a Hilton in East Memphis. Cheaper than a lot of the downtown hotels but not cheap cheap. In a very safe area of Memphis. I believe there is also a Holiday Inn Select/Express right off of Poplar in the same area as well. These are right off of 240 as well. So easy to get back onto interstate.

Our mail carrier is from Memphis. He mentioned that he thought Germantown was a safe area. What do you think of that? Again, we are not coming for any event per se, just passing through next week. I would like to see Graceland but I don't know that we will.

Do you know anything about a Hampton Inn close to Poplar?

Yes, there's a Hampton on Poplar near Estate.

It really depends how much you want to do while in town. If you're just going to crash for the night, you might want to mapquest Germantown Pkwy and I-40. This is at exit 16 just as you come into town and it's full of hotels, restaurants, a mall.

If you want to actually see some of Memphis, there are plenty of suggestions that would be a bit more convenient, depending on what you want to see. However, Germantown, though safe, is not what I would consider really convenient to those things (Graceland, downtown, etc.).

Let us know and we can offer more specifics.

Yeah, I would really like to see Graceland, but I'm not sure if we will end up doing it. See if I can get my husband on board with that! I am the Elvis fan, but he indicated he had some interest in seeing Graceland too. So we'll see.

Thanks all, for your info and input.
