Consolidating most things wouldn't be very drastic. Keep in mind that Millington, Bartlett, Arlington, Lakeland, Germantown, and Collierville all have individual state charters -- so those municipalities would retain control over most aspects of their communities. The notable exception being, of course, schools, since those towns do not operate their own school systems.

Consolidation of city and county would really have only a measurable effect on those 100,000 or so people who live in unincorporated Shelby County. They could benefit from city services, and we could benefit from the taxes collected.

The only way the City can ever get anything out of the other incorporated towns in Shelby County is to institute a payroll tax. Or a commuter tax, which is cutting-edge and would never fly here.

That's called taxation without representation.
I seem to recall a revolution about such things.

You may call it that. I call it paying for services being used, rather than freeloading.

Either way, it is going to happen soon. The City Council promises to visit the issue soon.

Finally visited Memphis...spent 5 days there.

Wow ----------- your city is small....downtown Memphis is like the suburbs to me.....Beale street is kind of cool....I also like the cute houses in Midtown.
I might actually die of boredom...I have to say though, stuff in Memphis is cheap...and you have no traffic...

I've decided on Hunters Trace.................

How big is Toronto? I always thought that was a small city too.
But if you can't find things to keep you busy here, then that's your own fault. There is plenty to do in Memphis, don't worry. Way more to do in the city than out in the burbs.

Toronto is the fourth or fifth largest city in North America, IIRC.

BTW, feel free to not move here. Is someone forcing you to?

FYI......from Wiki

Memphis is a city in the southwest corner of Tennessee, and the county seat of Shelby County. Memphis rises above the Mississippi River on the 4th Chickasaw Bluff just below the mouth of the Wolf River. As of 2006, Memphis had an estimated population of 670,902, making it the largest city in the state of Tennessee, the second largest in the southeastern region (only to Jacksonville, Florida), and the 17th largest in the United States. The greater Memphis metropolitan area (including the adjacent areas of Mississippi and Arkansas) has a population of 1,260,581. This makes Memphis the second largest metropolitan area in Tennessee, surpassed only by metropolitan Nashville.

Toronto is the largest city in Canada, and the provincial capital of Ontario,[4] it is located on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario. With over 2.5 million residents,it is the fifth-most populous municipality in North America. Toronto is at the heart of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), and is part of a densely-populated region in south-central Ontario known as the Golden Horseshoe which is home to over eight million resident. The census metropolitan area (CMA) had a population of 5,113,149, and the Greater Toronto Area had a population of 5,555,912 at the 2006 Census.

....Toronto's not small

Actually, according to this World's Largest Cities [rank: 1-1000] --- Toronto is second in North America, behind New York...

Honestly, americans know little about canada. It's north of us, right?

Memphis has about a million people. The metro area is huge and expands well into MS, AR, and western TN.

You'll find few 5 million people cities in the US, so you'll have to get used to that.

p.s.....not to sound rude, but no likes a "city" person moving into town and whining about there being nothing to do and the town is too small. I agree...I like bigger cities as well, however there is plenty to do in Memphis to keep me occupied. I mean really, you're working 8 hours a day anyways, it's not like you have 24 hours to pack with activities. Most people get "out" and do things for a few hours on the weekends and that's about it.

......no one is forcing me to....I was making a comparison since someone mentioned that s/he thought Toronto was a small city, I didn't think there was something wrong educating other people about a place in Canada. I don't recall saying Memphis was all bad - just that I might be bored. I did mention good things too, no need to sound so defensive.

"wow your city is small, i might die of boredom" can be offensive to anyone who likes their hometown.
