Ativan works the best of the benzos for me. It doesnt make me slur my words...lol. Just helps me get to sleep at
1/2 mg.
I know. I was addicted to Ativan for eight years, altough it's a downer IMO it felt like a upper. Dam, those years went fast. Thing is that after a long stint with benzos it's really hard to function completely without them. I'm currently on 10mg Valium (slurs my words) per day nowadays and altough I might not be the sharpest tool in the shed anymore I'm working and have a somewhat normal life.

I found with Ativan (and Klonipin, too) they had a depressive effect on me. "Depressive" meaning, they made me feel actually depressed. Xanax made me feel "alive". Not high, just functional and alert. My thoughts felt clear. It was when I wasn't on it that I had problems with slurring. But when I was out of xanax and tried to substitute ativan or klonipin (my father had some years ago), I didn't like the way either made me feel at all.
I was given a fairly strong dose of Ativan to take just before going into surgery about 3 weeks ago. It was an in-office procedure only using local anesthesia, and the surgeon routinely prescribes one Ativan just before. I slurred like crazy and felt drunk. I was aware of how I sounded, too, and felt so stupid, like in a dream when you can't get your words to form right. During the procedure, I was trying to ask questions, and I remember him saying a few times "I'm sorry, I don't quite understand what you're trying to ask." I felt doped up for hours.
I was prescribed 2 10 mg Valium (1 pill twice a day if needed) to help me when I was tapering off Xanax, and only to use if I was having severe anxiety during withdrawal (10 mg was not even close to the equivalent of the amount of xanax I was taking at the time, so it was, for me, a very small dose. The goal was definitely not to switch one addiction for another!). It helped keep the anxiety at bay during some rough patches, or take the edge off, at least. Once I got down to the "lower" levels of xanax (and we're talking 3-4 mg a day, so "low" is relative) and was becoming less dependant, I found I didn't need the "safety net" of the Valium. I still have almost a full bottle somewhere in my drawer that's a few years old.

Each person has different reactions to different drugs. Xanax made my head swim!
Xanax has gained its preferred status mostly due to how quickly it works, The same thing can also be bad, when the calm wears off, and you need more of the stuff. I envy those who have taken Xanax on and off for many years without any addicting side effects. I thought I was in that ballpark, when those anxiety attacks started coming on, and I would pop 3-4 1 MG pills like it was candy. However, there were periods when I went for months even years when I took none. Just having the bottle along seemed good enough at the time.
Years later, in Senior times the ability to handle most drugs became a problem, Booze became the drug of choice, not a good mix. At lest I have been sober 7-8 years now , don't miss it, had no withdrawals ether. I can not say that about Xanax. Benzos are the most addicting thing out there.Just cutting down became hell on earth ! Don't take them unless you have complete confidence in your medical professional.

I dont know,Id say nicotine is pretty bad. Ive seen people go nuts over that addiction.
The uncomfortable fact about Xanax, says Nicola Cowling, a project leader from drug-treatment agency Anex, is that it works really well for anxiety, but it also has a paradoxical effect. "People who think they are going to have their rough edges knocked off by dropping a few tablets can sometimes find themselves experiencing acute rage, becoming extremely uninhibited and having no recollection of what they were doing when they were off their faces on the drug," she says

that ^^^is not only the craziest but also funniest thing I have read in a long, long time.
because it is ridiculous. I've known a lot of people of varying ages who have had to use Xanax and thank God there is such a med available for people who need it; I have never, ever seen anyone experiencing acute rage, becoming extremely uninhibited and having no recollection of what they were doing when they were off their faces on the drug,"

I'm not aware of anyone I know using this... so ...do you think those people were making things up, had other issues? Or that the drug could affect people in different ways, (mixing with alcohol, other drugs?, also, Do you think its over prescribed?)
