I was on Paxil years ago. Best med ever! But it can put on weight if you're not careful. I would go back on Paxil if it wasn't for the weight gain.
Right now I take Xanax for BP spikes, it knocks me out cold within a hour.
Yes Cupcake, I do watch the calories and walk daily. But it is a good
med. for me. I have Ativan if needed, but really dont need it anymore
since the Paxil is workin!
Every person is different, you need to do what is best for you. The medication that works for anxiety is the same for depression. You can take it for a short time and get yourself under control and try to ween yourself.
However, there are people that must take this medication for the rest of their life. It has nothing to do with masking the symptoms, it has to do with your brain chemistry. Even if you do everything to get your attacks under control, you may not always be able to.
Antidepressants typically are used to treat anxiety. Even if you truly take an anti-anxiety medication, you will need an antidepressant to offset the depressive aspects of anti-anxiety medication.
I take klonopin---as needed. But if I were to take it on a daily basis, I would want to take an antidepressant with it. Anti-anxiety medications are benzos, downers.
OP, quit being hung up on what type of medication you are taking. All that matters if if it gives you relief. There's nothing to be ashamed of.
I consider it a weakness of character when someone refuses to take mental health medication when they truly need it.

Love this. I felt it was a weakness watching my mom taking them for her entire life (for other reasons). Needless to say I had it hammered in these were bad. A doctor finally said to me "I think you need to stop getting hung up on taking a drug. It is helping you right?" That finally made me realize I need a combination of both.
My doctor prescribed me to take Citalopram and I don't want to take it. It's for people with major depression. I don't have depression; I have anxiety.
Is there any possible way of curing anxiety if I take this medication for a very limited amount of time?? I'm ashamed of taking anxiety medication, it's something I never wanted to do. Yet, I continuously embarrass myself as well as others when they see me suffering from it.
First of all Citalopram is not for MAJOR depression. I know, I was taking it for minor depression/anxiety. I recently stopped because it became apparent to me that 'me, myself and I' are my very own worst enemy. I still don't care much for very large crowds. However, I have taught myself to ignore the feelings of anger/anxiety/depression and am much happier. Even on the worst of days.

Citalopram is also sometimes used to treat eating disorders, alcoholism, panic disorder (condition that causes sudden attacks of extreme fear with no apparent cause), premenstrual dysphoric disorder (a group of physical and emotional symptoms that occur before the menstrual period each month), and social phobia (excessive anxiety about interacting with others). Talk to your doctor about the possible risks of using this medication for your condition.
