Diet can be a huge contributor to depression. Does he eat a whole foods diet? Avoid processed foods, chemicals, and sugar? That would be a good place to start.
Can you buy him a membership to a gym? The release of endorphins is a real thing that happens when you work out and his self-esteem will improve, as well.
I feel that IBS is related to overwhelm. Could that apply to his life? If so, can stressors be eliminated?
Sunshine (Vitamin D) is essential, even when it is cold out, and Vitamin B through whole grains should help, as well. A B-Complex seems to help the nerves.
I agree. Exercise is so important to me for my mental health. My husband can see a huge difference in me (mood, energy, attitude) when I am exercising regularly and when I am not.
My son is experiencing depression and I would like to know if anyone has had success with supplements. He also has IBS and a very touchy stomach. He tried St. John's Wart.....seemed to upset his stomach. Are there specific B vitamins that are helpful.
I traded out my morning coffee for Emergen-C (which has B vitamins in it) and my energy level throughout the day has improved (which helps my mood). I don't know how much was getting rid of caffeine (I still have a mug of 75% decaf/25% caf mid-morning) and how much was getting some more B Vitamins, but it has been a nice change.
Certainly if he is suffering from depression, anything he can do to make himself physically healthier would be good. If he is a coffee/soda/tea drinker, I'd see if he can cut back. I was a long-time coffee drinker and I weaned off over the course of one week with no major issues. I'm really glad I did.
Also he needs to be getting enough sleep.
Exercise (for me it has to be hard exercise like running) helps my mood and stave off depression.
Were the doctors unwilling to help him by prescribing medication?
This has been an on going problem for many years....he is 35 is married and has a wonderful little girl.
He is not consistant with diet and healthful eating. He does feel better when he exercises.
Medication has been tried many times, and one big problem is his sleep pattern. May sleep some during the day then have trouble at night. It is a roller coaster ride with him. He was just prescribed with a new sleep med and that seems to help. Antidepressants do have side effects that men would rather not have..........He is now going to school for some tech training which he is enjoying. I know things will never be perfect.
I've had great success with vitamin B shots. The oral supplements are ok, but usually excrete in the urine faster. Try the sub-lingual supplement if it's inconvenient to get the shots on a regular basis.
Supplements, exercise and diet, coupled with treatment by professionals who treat their patients holistically, can work wonders through various stages of life.
I hope everything works out well for you.
