How does one get a hookup for anxiety meds? They're controlled substances, so in my experience, docs are stingy about prescribing them. Do I need to get them from a shrink? If one is able to get them from a regular doc, how do I convince them to hook me up? I'm middle-aged and have suffered with anxiety since my teens and it doesn't get any better - worse in fact. I can't afford to see a shrink, but I'd love to get some calming meds for it.
The closest thing I'm able to get are my sleep aids. Before bed is when my anxiety is worst of all anyway.

I get Ativan from my family practice Dr. Not hard !
I got a prescription for Adavan just by requesting them from my doctor. After a few months, I came upon a situation where I had to be alert (driving) for 2 - 10 hour days. I had to cut out the Adavan. My anxiety attacks came more frequently at first. I was low and about to request another scrip when it occurred to me I'd become dependent on them. I weaned myself off and am using the same relaxation techniques I used to use. I haven't had an attack in a couple weeks. (I've had anxiety attacks for over 30 years, as a result of abuse. I didn't know it was anxiety attacks though until recently - I thought I was just going insane and didn't want anyone to know, so I hid it for the majority of my life).
They can be dangerous, if abused. I realized that I only needed them once in awhile, but due to some heavy stress, I was leaning on them much more heavily than I should've - the effects were so calming and I didn't have to 'deal with' anything - I could just escape into the land of "hmmm....".
If you can function without them, please continue doing so, for your own sake. I also get the majority of my attacks at night - generally at bedtime, or I awaken shortly after having fallen asleep in the thick of it. Deep breaths and speaking out loud, helps to calm me, as does getting up and walking into the next room to sit - I turn on lights - darkness just makes it worse.
Good luck - I hope you find what you need to help you, even if you have to resort to pills. Anxiety sucks.
Sorry to hear you are going thru this. I just started taking Zoloft, and I like it a lot. Calms me down nicely. It is a good long-term anxiety/depression med. There is one major negative. I have absolutely no interest or pleasure in sex. Without going into TMI, i took great pleasure in sex before taking this med. I think a lot of meds have a similar side effect.

Yeah that side effect is the pits eh? Ive had that on Paxil.
I have periods of anixiety and I asked my physician for something to help and she wouldn't do it, instead she just suggested zoloft. I really would rather not take a daily pill, only something when an attack hits.
I dont' want to disrespect the o.p. by bypassing the meds question but finding a way into a yoga, qigong or tai chi practice is something to consider.
A combination of therapy if needed, herbal remedies for calming the mind and body and a daily practice as mentioned is a way to empower oneself by learning how to retrain and ultimately transform the whole system of being so that it can effectively deal with both inner and outer stress and come into a more balanced state.
The body is naturally "equipped" to come into balance but we have lost touch with and trust in its amazing ability to correct itself and our ability to heal ourselves.
A daily practice that works with all levels of being (as yoga and qigong and tai chi do) is also a way to radically heal and to evolve and to, ultimately speaking, realize who we are / our full potential.
It also loosens the dependency on prescription medication which will always involve side effects and will potentially disallow one from getting to the root of the issue that is creating such imbalance.
But it takes effort and time .... and can be extremely enjoyable.
