You could compare your parents to other parents, LOL!!

Parent: Why can't you be more like this kid?

Child: Why can't you be more like this parent?

My mom used to do it, but in a contradictory, inconsistent way (I guess just to mess with my head)

For instance, she'd say something like "why don't you make more of an effort to hang out with the in-crowd?" (I was a part-time member of the "cool" crowd, but not an insider.)

Then when a couple girls in the "in crowd" got caught drinking or sneaking out, etc, my Mom would be like "I'm so glad you're not in the in-crowd like so-and-so is!" (Mom, did you just call me a loser?)

Or she say that so-and-so (my friend) is too wrapped up in fashion and so-and-so's mother spoils her by buying her expensive clothes all the time. Then I'd be getting ready to go out, thinking I looked nice, and my mom would be like "Are you going out in THAT? You look like the Grapes of Wrath. Here's some money, go buy something presentable."

Yeah, moms keep therapists in business.....

I also did this a couple times, and like FireAndIce said, my mom got PEEVED. I told her straight out, don't dish it out of you can't take it back at you.

This is usually what a controlling parent will do in this situation. It's typical of the authoritarian personality; take away their control and they go haywire. It's kind of fun, to be honest.

Well, in a sad turn of events one of the kids my mom always wanted me to be like, has turned out not so great (to put it nicely). Jail time, drugs, stealing, physical violence, emotional abuse towards parents etc. and all were signs they showed at a young age. I asked my mother once if she still wished I was just like her and if my brother was more like the son, like she always wanted.

It was fun to see her sputtering and get upset.
