Taking frequent daytime naps and sleeping too long at night could be early warning signs of dementia, or even contribute to the brain condition, say neurologists.

They have found a link between excessive sleep and problems with thinking in the elderly.
Many older people take forty winks, and it is usually only because they need a physical rest from exertion.

Gimme my naps! I don't sleep well at night, but I always feel guilty about my naps. I shouldn't. I only get them on weekends.

I have horrible sleep habits, Usually don't get to sleep til 3 or 4 am. Then up by 8-9 am. Everyday I take at least 2 one hour naps. I rarely exercise and am in pretty good health says my doctor. I've been retired for 12 years and recently scored one of the highest scores one can get on a cognitive test and have an IQ of 142. So I don't put much faith into some of these reports.

Daytime naps could also be a symptom of Obstructive Sleep Apnea, which can contribute to dementia (presumably due to lack of brain oxygenation):

I used to have sleep apnea, but no longer have it (according to the doctors) however I still need naps. I don't sleep well at night. What is a person supposed to do?
