I know it does that to me.
I've been having to live next to main roads for awhile now and it seems like everyone and their mom has a Harley Davidson, or some other vehicle with an excessively loud exhaust.
Some of the users of these things call it their "freedom of expression".
Seems more like oppressing others with our constant gripping of the throttle.

Any ways, I work at night and attempt to sleep during the day.
Whether it's the city I just moved from, or the one I just moved to, I feel that avoiding these noises is a losing battle.

We all know physically attacking these inbreds is unfortunately illegal, and cops won't do much of anything to enforce noise-pollution issues(potential revenue generator right there, why are they not pursuing it?).
I've tried head/earphones and they either come off when rolling around in sleep, or they're still not good at droning out the noise.
My only other option is to find a job/place in a car-free/light area or move off the beaten path some place.

As far as the "if it's too loud, you're too old" mentality goes, I'm 29 and never found a use for the audio output of these machines.

Do normal, everyday noises bother you, or are you hypersensitive to things like whistling, motorcycles (as you noted), and other loud noises?

There is a condition called Hyperacusis which may account for this. Have you considered seeing a specialist to see if there is anything that can be done?

It could be this.
I don't know about whistling, but when I do get agitated over it, I always thought it was more of a "jealousy thing" over the fact that I'm not able to whistle worth a nickel.

Anywho, I've kind of gotten over doctors or any other professionals due to the fact that a side-effect laden medication will almost always be issued.
Once I ever get the health insurance straightened out again, maybe just for the diagnosis.

As far as packing up and moving to a quieter location goes, I've got 5-6 more months left before I could transfer to a different locale of my choosing.
Funny thing is the fact that I'm driving semi-trucks locally as a job and the low-rumble noises and the noise at the cheese plant doesn't really bother me at all.

Perhaps it's not as high-intensity as say, those chromed-out exhausts on a trophy-truck.

That's how my SO's condition is too. He doesn't mind things like the sound of a lawnmower, traffic, etc.

Have you tried a white noise machine or anything like that to drown out the noise?

Loud exhaust pipes are stupid in my opinion and I dislike them very much, the rest of the white noise is just repetative and at times annoys me but usually when I've got a migraine. When that hits I like everything quiet but that is just from the pain of the migraine.

Yes loud noise bothers me. I've never "blasted" my stereo, so have very good hearing. The sound level in some public movie theaters is too loud to me.

So far as your options...

Move.

You can get that pink insulation in rolls from a home improvement store and tape it or staple it to the inside of your windows. This can be cut with scissors. That will cut down the noise.

Is there another room in the house further away from the noise? Maybe sleep there?

And then constant "white noise" like a noisy fan going full blast constantly can help to block out noise and helps me sleep better.

Here is more info...

I am the same as Billy J. I've never liked loud music, even when I was young. I don't like noise. Motorcycles irritate the heck out of me. I used to have a roommate who would immediately put the TV on blasting whenever she walked into the living room. WHY WHY WHY?

I'm currently renting a motel room on a monthly basis since I'm on uncertain of how long I'll be sticking to this area. Once I've got six months at this current location, I'm seeking out a quieter setting.
I'm aware of the insulation as it's the same type used in my stepdads place.

Anywho, I'm just going to do what I can for now to handle it.
Whether it's hitting the gym for a short time after work, or taking weekend trips out to quieter places. Motorsports enthusiasts may keep some segments of the economy going, but some of us would rather not deal with the endless demonstration of horsepower ability. Some people just never advance beyond teenaged anger/one upmanship stage.

I understand completely and have been in the same situation. Buy several box fans and keep them near your bed, computer whatever. Box fans are your friends.

I'm hyper-sensitive to noise. All noise. The neighbor's kid has a curb-side basketball goal. His constant bouncing of the ball on the road drives me crazy. Even a short time is bad but this kid stays out bouncing the ball for hours. Can't blame the kid who is just being a kid but holy cow--my nerves are shot over it. But any constant noise makes me edgy and anxious.
