Taking Xanax is a very common thing. There IS a reason Dr's prescribe it. Way too many options here, without knowing the whole story. There are people that are taking some form of Xanax / Benzos there entire life, always a reason, it's a fine line that we cross when acting like a professional. Fact is not all Doc's will use the same approach ether, furthermore all people are different. Let's not try to evaluate or diagnose directly on a forum that is set up for providing mostly information .
Now, some general facts. ; Benzos are the hardest drug to control. Reason, they are the most addicting, more so than any of the street drugs. They are the drug of choice to treat most depression attacks, which is the most common ailment in the medical world. Because of Benzos ability to be effective more than any other treatment, and their quick acting ability is why Xanax is the drug of choice by Medical professionals and those who seek a cure or at lest, some relief depending on the problem .It can be very easy to get in trouble for many, but not all.when realizing when it's too late and you become dependent on the drug. Because of the quick acting nature ,getting off or reducing the intake should always be done under strict supervision . The most effective way of cutting back and even stoping altogether is the use of a time released dosage that will remove, over time, the highs people get by taking these drugs.
There are people that should remain on some form of Benzos all their remaining life, while others should be weaned off slowly, especially those who really abuse their meds by the use of a combo, self treating foolish, which can be very dangerous . Put your mental problems in the hands of proper medical professionals should always be the first step
I do think however , in many cases way too many Doc's dispense Benzos without the proper observance . It is easy to write a prescription with out strict follow up. That in itself is a very problematic area for the Medical profession along with knowing the full history and the lack of sharing info. Thousands of misery ridden peoples problems could be avoided with better sharing an better access to people's medical history.

I feel bad for the guy and hope someone helps him.

This has been going on for 10 years. he drained our fathers bank account and our dad finally had the cops remove him from his home. He wont give out his address, nobody knows where he lives expect in a hotel but we'll leave it to you to help him. You'll be a forum hero and maybe someone will even write a song about you.

Just a couple of quick points: Xanax and other anxiolytics are primarily used to treat anxiety. Antidepressants are primarily used to treat depression. In fact SSRIs are the initial antidepressants of choice for uncomplicated depression. Depression is not the "most common ailment in the medical world." In 2010, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report estimating the prevalence of current depression in adults from 2006-2008. Of 235,067 adults, 9% met the criteria for current depression, including 3.4% who met the criteria for major depression.

Perhaps you are confusing anxiety and depression which are two different entities. Yes, they can be co-morbidities, but you can't just lump them both together.

Benzodiazepines are not the most addictive drugs, in fact they are less addictive than most street drugs and less addictive than nicotine. Also, the reason detox from Xanax and similar drugs needs to be supervised is not because of the "quick acting nature" it is because the effects of withdrawal have life threatening consequences, seizures for one. Switching a person to a long acting form of the drug is not a medically accepted way to detox.

You are, of course, entitled to your opinion, but when you make inaccurate statements and call them facts, I feel obligated (as a medical professional - not crossing any line here!) to set the record straight.
