We've all heard and read Hitler (and others like Stalin, Pol Pot, etc) described as "crazy", "deranged", and "insane".

But would Hitler have actually satisfied any clinical definitions for mental illness had he been evaluated by a psychiatrist?

Yes.

Do you think the president of the US at the time the atomic attacks on Japan would be considered mentally healthy?

Hitler, at the time of death, his body was ravaged by syphiliis which he had for years and it effected his mental capacities.

Part of me wants to say no. Insanity excuses the evil Hitler did. It also excuses the evil an all too willing populace did in his name and under his government. That said, the other part of me can't believe that a healthy mind could harbor such hatred and even carry it through.

Yes it was reported that Hitler had syphillis...when left untreated it causes a person to have severe mental issues (insanity). Plus he had to be a psychopath....to actually implement the killing techniques that went on...ugh the worst point in humanity.

I would go on with my psychology diagnosis but it would take forever...he has several mental problems...as well as Stalin, Pol Pot etc...yes they were nuts.

Yes. Hitler exterminated millions in the name of eugenics. We dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese because they were an enemy, and an enemy that was an ally of Hitler at that. We were the good guys and they were the bad guys. Sometimes it's really that simple.

Hitler didn't wreak that evil on his own. Were they all crazy?

But when he began and his plans were drawn, when he wrote Mein Kamph, when he laid out his hatred on paper, he was quite in control of himself. Being hateful of itself does not mean one is mentally ill, just hateful. When the plans were laid out for the camps, early on, he and his henchmen were all quite under control. When the plans were followed it was evil, but also a lesson in how a train of hatred becomes self generating as it grows. At the end, when trains to move soldiers to battle areas were missing but half dead victurms of that hate still had plenty of them to haul them away from potential rescures, its pretty clear the control had gone entirely over to the hatred, at the expense of what would be considered a 'normal' priority.

Besides the syphysis, his 'doctor' made up a 'tonic' with was mostly meth along with a few other powerful drugs and some fruit juice. It was always available. His 'doctor and his kit' went everywhere Hitler went. His later instability was in much part to do with this. His distrust of his generals and advisers also sprung from the number of assination attempts and his distrust that any of them could be planning to try again. This well might not have been paranoia.

Does it excuse any of it? Not at all. The plans and the hatred and the intent were there long before as the machine was set in motion. Those who didn't stop it when it was obvious they could have are guilty, but even if Hitler had lost most of his sanity (not saying he did necessarily) that it was his idea and his plan and his insistance it happen which lays the road of guilt right to the end.
