Recently I overdosed on some sleeping pills. It's been about 4 weeks but I'm noticing that I have been getting "dumber". I've been forgetting simple things such as a number I just dialed or where I just put an object. I also have trouble reading. I have to slow down and read word for word. Could this be a side effect of the overdose? I'm 20 years old and will be attending college in January after a 2.5 year hiatus from school.

Yeah taking many sleeping pills can harm your bodies. Try to avoid these things. Sleeping pills make you breathe more slowly and less deeply. That can be dangerous for people with uncontrolled lung problems such as asthma.
The following are the some common side effects of sleeping pills.
  • Burning or tingling in the hands, arms, feet, or legs
  • Changes in appetite
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Difficulty keeping balance
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth or throat
  • Gas
  • Headache
  • Heartburn
  • Stomach pain or tenderness
  • Uncontrollable shaking of a part of the body
  • Unusual dreams
  • Weakness

Was the OD on purpose or an accident? If on purpose, even a "little" on purpose, then I'd agree that depression is a real possibility and that will make you feel dumb as you won't be able to concentrate. I'm guessing the pills would have an effect also.
