I need some ideas on how I can pull myself off the computer or ANYTHING ELSE, like my yearly planner etc., to get myself to bed at a decent time?? I thought about hiring an adult babysitter to come over and MAKE SURE I get myself to bed, like a sitter does with a kid. What do you think? Anyone have any other ideas?? I really need help with this! I think it may be ADHD, not sure. Thank you!

3:52am I have the same issue! So easy to plug into YouTube or something. I have work and class tho, so I can’t allow myself up that late. If I didn’t have those, I might be doing that...staying up that late really can get me depressed/mad at myself tho!

The problem is, once you’re tired, you keep making similar judgment mistakes and staying up too late - that is my experience. Do you have a job or any schoolwork that’s getting negatively affected? If you only got 4 - 6 hours of sleep a night, that’d be a doozy. You need some time to reset yourself!

Do you have any off days? I don’t use the computer or phone on Sunday, so I have a full 24 - 30 hours to reset. Do you have anything to look forward to that would be affected by your late hours? Or are you just fine with whatever happens in life, coasting along?

It really is a drug addiction and it really is tough. Screens keep us awake and the internet keeps giving drug-like stimulation.

There are trackers you can put on your computer. You can also block certain sites. You can also turn off your internet, like cancel your service.

I don’t know about it being ADHD, but it could be. I have the same problem tho, so... maybe learning about myself here!

If you are a night owl, a person who stays up late and sleep late that's your personality. You might be even unable to fall asleep on "normal" times. You are probably most energetic and productive at that time.
If that's the case - you should get a job that starts late, so you get enough sleep to function properly.
But if you are a computer addict, and just don't know when to quit and go to bed, work early hours, feel always sleepy, tired, often too late to work, and unproductive then you need to get help.
Now, if you fight you sleepiness because you want to stay up at night or have insomnia that should be addresses also.
Figure out what prevents you from going to bed at normal hours (before midnight) and if you are having harder time falling asleep and staying asleep.
Sleep deprivation has many negative consequences like anxiety, reduced efficiency and productivity, errors, and accidents. It affects immune system, might increase cardiovascular disease, obesity, etc.

What you may be (have) is Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome or non-24 hour circadian rhythm disorder.

I haven DSPS and the best thing to do is not fight your true nature, just learn to live with it.

Same. Only living with it is not an option for me as it interferes with my work schedule and has resulted in severe sleep deprivation. At the moment I'm trying to restrict my sleeping hours and gradually bring them forward with the help of antihistamines, which thankfully I can buy over the counter. There are other bits and pieces that I'm trying and it's all a pain but it is a necessary evil if I am to keep my job and sanity.

How would I get help? Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!

I put my ipad away at 10pm, take a hot bath, then get in bed and turn on the TV to a House Hunters show or anything that’s on HGTV. I’m asleep in 15 minutes. I usually just turn the TV off when I start nodding off but most TV sets have an off timer. Give it a try.

#1 Are you still able to do your work, school, &/or any other obligations you have to do despite the staying up late?

#2 Are you feeling tired when you wake up as though you didn't get enough sleep?

If you answered YES to #1 & NO to #2, then that may just be how your body is, but I can still understand the annoying feeling & your desire to go to sleep earlier. I have no advice, sorry.

Maybe a psychologist or therapist can help w/ this kind of thing too since this is partly in the mind. Also, you may want to see a sleep specialist.

I'm a night owl myself who goes to bed when I'm tired/sleepy & when my head hits the pillow, I probably fall asleep w/i 10-15 minutes. I never had sleeping issues & usually sleep throughout the night 99.9% of the time.

Is self-discipline something you have tried?

Like turning the computer off at a certain time, doing "sleep hygiene" activities, etc.?

Or do you expect people to come up with magic solutions to your problem?

Do hire an adult babysitter and report back!

Totally agree Once you're in bed, it is easier to nod off --- my nod off time is right after the late news (after they call the lottery #'s). The OP should see a physician first. Melatonin can help also --- only 5 mg though, unless prescribed more by a doctor.

Being a retired Realtor, some of those HGTV and Fixer Upper shows bore me to tears. Animal Planet is more helpful.
