Diagnosis.

ADD was unheard of when I was in school. But there were dumb kids and kids who just didn't sit still or pay attention. They all were put down or punished or ignored. There was only one way to learn and if they didn't follow that way, they were left behind.

The kids nowadays are examined to see what the reasons are for their inability to conform.

Yes. It's just a popular diagnosis now, and very overdiagnosed, IMO. They exist, just not as many kids have these conditions as are diagnosed.

Paternal age may be one of many factors.

Paternal age effect - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paternal age older than 55 is a moderate risk factor for*schizophrenia.[20]

Most studies examining autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and advanced paternal age have demonstrated an association between the two, but some have not.

Risk of bipolar disorder appears to increase with increasing age of the father. (Arch. Gen. Psychiatry 65, 1034–1040; 2008)[medical citation needed]

Cancers

Paternal age may be associated with an increased risk of*breast cancer,*[21]but the association is weak and there are confounding effects.[2]

Back when we were young my DH (and all of his siblings) were "hyper" and my Sister was "smart and painfully shy".
We can trace these traits back several generations and have unfortunately passed them on to our children (one has ADHD and the other has Aspergers).

That was my experience. The children who needed the most help didn't get it.

There is no upsurge. It's related to big pharma wanting more money, and lazy parents that would rather have their kids suffer life long side effects and be zombies than give them the attention they need to be happy.
