Forget GABA, l-theanine, or any of the supplements touted to help with anxiety or depression. The only way these things will "help" you is if you are very prone to getting the placebo effect.
Whatever works I say. These calming supps work for me and a big part of my 9+ hrs of good sleep nightly.
For those taking benzos, do research on memory issues connection.

Neither one worked for me at all for sleep but there's a Japanese study that says GABA does work, whether or not it penetrates the blood brain barrier or not. It does something in a lot of people. The Japanese take something called pharma gaba to calm them down in their overly stressed society.
I don't think this is the study I read but it sort of explains it:
It's worked good for me. By day, it helps me focus and at night it can help shut down too much brain chatter that can disrupt sleep. Sometimes I just use the Natural Factors chewables, and other times I use in the combination (theanine, holy basil, gaba, relora) by Source Naturals called Theanine Serine with Relora.
One can also use Lemon Balm, as it will raise your body's GABA levels.
