My best suggestion is to LEAVE. Most single guys I know aren't very happy living with their moms, especially if its just mom and son and the son is over 21. I would not allow my mom or anyone to say this to me. It's not your fault "she smokes and drinks". A person chooses to smoke and drink and I'm suprised she doesn't know this by now.. I smoke cigarettes and drink because I choose too. We all have crutches and choose to use tobacco or have a little alcohol but it's because it's our choice. Your mom needs to grow up and get her own job so she can buy all the smokes and drinks she wants. I lived at home until I was 30. It wasn't always fun having someone above me tell me rules. You will be happier on your own even if you can't afford cable or internet. I only had an antenna TV for the first 6 months. But was happier because I had my own space. 2nd option would be to get a roommate or move in with someone close to your age. Even if you are only out for a little bit, treasure it!! Try to do everything you can to move out of the house!
My advice is to see if you can find a room to rent from someone or get a roommate. Your family (like most) gets tangled up inside each others issues. Putting some distance between you and your family is a healthy thing. I was raised in a horrible family environment. Sometimes it is hard doing things on your own when you see other people who get support from their family. Any support you are getting from your family (by living cheaper, etc) is forfeited by the damage.
