Both Britain and the usa(and maybe other countries) used to house mentally unstable persons in sanitoriums until late into the 20th century. Here in Britain they then started what they termed"care in the community"which to put it simply housed the former residents in special houses in the general community. They then closed all the large sanitoriums which if the "project" failed meant there were nowhere for these residents to go back to.Without wishing to ramble on to much and with the recent on air tv murders by a mentally unstable person in the news does anybody think it was a mistake to shut down these facilities or on the other hand does any one think "care in the community" has been a success.Personally I think that sanitoriums should still be in use as the people were all at least kept together and looked after by trained staff instead of the current scattergun approach to mental health.
