That's silly hyperbole.

[quote=KathrynAragon;42817298]I can't believe the OP thinks that Borderline Personality Disorder and Bipolar Disorder are basically the same thing.

Also, she's very active on other threads (basically active being shot down over her strange responses) so I'm not so sure that her "self treatment" is working as well as she thinks it is.

I've got several immediate family members who are truly seriously mentally ill, two of them with bipolar disorder and at least one with paranoid schizophrenia. Two of them are 100 percent disabled by their mental illnesses and several are less impaired but ALL of them need meds to control their symptoms and make life bearable - if not for themselves, for those around them.

I do have two (out of about five - mental illness runs rampant on my mother's side of the family) who refuse to take any meds and they are both pretty hard to deal with. Also, neither of them are able or even willing to work outside the home due to their untreated mental illnesses. Both of them are just lucky because they live with family members who are willing to put up with their behaviors. Thankfully, they don't live with me and never will - I don't have a lot of patience with people who refuse treatment for any illness, but especially mental illness.

My psychologist informed me there are certain criteria that borderline and bipolar depression both exhibit, so maybe OP is referring to that.

Poster above put it well....silly hyperbole

More than that your cavalier response trivializes REAL mental disorders which do in fact exist....

Certainly many folks are walking around with undiagnosed mental illness just as many are walking around with undiagnosed heart disease or kidney disease or cancers are various types..

There are many for instance that hold onto completely irrational and unscientific beliefs about subjects like oh I don't know...vaccine efficacy....who probably do have an undiagnosed mental disorder though..

"Every year, about 42.5 million American adults (or 18.2 percent of the total adult population in the United States) suffers from some mental illness, enduring conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, statistics released Friday reveal."
Nearly 1 in 5 Americans Suffers From Mental Illness Each Year

I do believe 18.2 % is < 100.00%

Then of course there's the inconvenient concept that those who "meet with" a psychiatrist usually have some inkling that they need their professional services. It's not the psychiatrists who generate the classifications....it's the clientele.
