My s/o has Bipolar 1 (is over 50 now too) & has bad days & often a switch to manic symptoms of lately. Is there any proven supplements to use along w/ Lithium (her doc gives it daily) & Depakote?

She takes Zoloft & Synthroid daily too. But of late she's been having sleep probs & very talkative, etc. I don't want full blown mania, as have seen it before & it is not good & needs hospitalization. Ok, thx if anyone can help.

IMO, No. There are herbs she could use but not with those medications because they would interfere with her meds. She should work with her diet - the place to start with any illness. Medicinal plants might be possible later on if she can reduce or eliminate any of her prescription meds by working with diet and lifestyle changes.

Good luck.

ETA: On second thought, there are some adaptogen herbs that wouldn't interfere with her meds, and potentially can help meds work better (for any condition), like american ginseng, eleuthero (aka siberian ginseng) rhodiola, ashwagandha, schizandra and possibly others. Just make sure any others are classified as adaptogens.

If you think she is having a manic episode, either you or her make an appointment to see her psychiatrist (go with her), and he can adjust her medications.

Supplements don't work for bipolar illness, and there is always the potential that they will interact with her mood stabilizers (e.g., Lithium and Depakote).
