I've been in a nursing home For 6 months. The event that precipitated my stay was non criminal.
A group home bed has been open to me for 4-5 weeks but the paperwork keeps getting screwed up. *cough* *cough*
It's a poor area and help for the mentally ill is get what you can, it won't be much.
I feel like I've been wasting my time.
If I can actually talk to my social worker-ish help, suburbs maybe? Maybe people wouldn't be so rotten to me there.

Doesn't matter where you are, help for the mentally ill is limited.
The fact that you are in a nursing home implies that you are probably not a danger to self or others.
Who placed you in the nursing home? Do you have an advocate?
I know what you mean and I am sorry your going thru this.....
I've heard some bad things about Nursing homes and I hope they are being good to you
I see that you have access to the internet. You can try to find out who to contact and start calling and sending them emails.
What about your nursing home ombudsmen? They aren't employed by the nursing home, and they are to help people living there.
Of course the nursing home is trying to keep you there!
They get your (almost) entire check!!
Nursing homes even tend to play with emergency situations and try to keep sick patients till few minutes after midnight before sending to hospital, so they can get paid for the next day.
You need external help, so start digging in the Internet.
Where are you located? Someone here might know how to help you find the right resources.

I have 2 advocates of sorts but I strongly suspect neither has a degree in social work.
One is from a local religious charity.
I guess it's because nobody could find me a place anywhere else.

Nursing Home placement is often an option for folks suffering with mental illness, clearly not the best option but better than a shelter. Seems to be more prevelent in poorer areas.
I agree with elnina, the Nursing Home has no incentive to refer you anywhere and they probably don't know where to refer you. They have experience with the geriatric population.
Who is pursuing the Group Home Placement? Contact those people and find out where your paperwork is.
I would also suggest you contact The National Alliance on Mental Illness https://www.nami.org
Get in touch with your local chapter and request their help. The chapter I volunteer for has quite a bit of influence in the area. They are staffed with fierce advocates for mentally ill people and are knowledgeable and very active in their communities.
Been here for 2.5 days and it's pretty good. The other residents are much nicer. I have more freedom to do things like work out.
