I keep on reading threads about people expressing they want to move to Mexico from the USA or Canada.
I get some of the reasons why ... but I also see a lot of reasons what that does not seem like the smartest idea.

My question is why?
Also who is this move good for? Age, sex and income.
For example if I am a 70 years old retired single male with a large retirement income my needs and desired and going to be a lot different then a married 27 year old woman.
The entire cost of living debate seems silly to me unless you are retired. For example if there is a low cost or living... but I make way less money ... this does not seem like a good move.

What type of American's or Canadians are being attracted to move to Mexico and why?

Mostly retired people, because you dollars have great value in Mexico.

For example if you receive a pension of US$1,000 dollars per month, today in México that is: $20,597 pesos, to put you in perspective a few months ago that was like $13,000 pesos. Both figures a very good income to live comfortly in any Mexico city, except maybe the big ones.

***

Currently thousands of Americans and Canadians live and work in Mexico hired mainly by transnational corporations that have assets in Mexico. From companies like GE, IBM, HP, Ford, GM, etc. They are payed in dollars so it´s the same as retired or better. they can have a very good life style.

Lived there fulltime for 5 years, retired. Bought a nice home; had to sell it and return to US to care for ill elderly relative who recently died.

Had hoped to return to MX, buy our 'forever' home. However, the Nov. US election has changed our plans. Now is NOT the time to invest in MX.....with all sorts of threats of economic sanctions against MX by the incoming US prez.

We will visit but not buy.

For what it is worth here. The US dollar exchange will benifit an American or a National that gets the US dollar in hand.
My SS income has not changed much inthe last 20 yrs here while costs Peso wisr has gone up gradually. The higher exchange rates may sound nice but the cost of food keeps climbing. I paid 8 pesos for a certain item thst hs increased to 10 or 11 pesos along with many other increases that are gradually raised. I feel for the locas ad it has to be hard for them in many ways.
Hen building my home here a bag of cement was about $5 that has more then doubled today....same with other builfing materials..basically it just comes down to numbers.
Recall decades ago buying a McDonalds burger for 0.10 cents......look at today.
As a teen worked a part time jobon Sat for 0.25 cents an hr....look at todays min wage hassles.
US or Mexico numbers just climb slowly.

Mainly, cost of living and mostly retirees. Food, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, everything is way cheaper. And, if you can afford to live by the beach or a nice medium sized city, it is tempting. Not only for Americans, Europeans too. I've met Europeans living in Mexico City and they had no plans to return.

I bought in a very rural area of MX to get away from the baracho expat types. I love the Mexican culture, food, music and pace.

I'm retiring soon anyway, but I feel like a rocket scientist for having my permanent escape plan in place prior to the US election.

Paradise may have a different meaning for some. As a former canuck from decades ago leaving the cold snow for so calif.
Going to any place that has NO snow etc could be considered Paradise.
After decades in calif I moved further south with comparable weather. May not be everyones cup of tea then again tea comes in different flavors.

Most houses in expat areas are priced in US Dollars so the exchange rate is moot.

We owned a home and our street was 60% locals, 40% expats (mostly CDNs). Went to our neighbors' homes for birthdays, cookouts. We watched out for each other. When we were new there, a man came to our gate with a sad luck story, I gave him a few pesos. AFter he left, my bell rang again and it was a neighbor who told me never to give him (or other beggars) any money or they will never leave us alone. He then ran down the street where the beggar was still walking and gave him a loud and harsh warning (I couldn't understand it).

While we want to return to MX, this is NOT the right time. The new US administration could destroy MX's economy....changes to NAFTA, large deportations. There will be job losses in MX and the added burden of new deportees will be a challenge...especially the criminal element.

We've decided to wait at least 2 years to see how MX does with the new economy that may be forced upon them. My guess is it'll get bad bad bad before it gets better. And housing prices may drop like a rock if expats get scared due to rising crime and scarce resources. Not gonna be pretty. Que lastima.

Please don't listen to the gloom and doom crowd. Mexico and it's people will be fine. It will always be less expensive and the healthcare more affordable than the USA.
Trump is not the eternal evil and the effect of the new administration will be small.
