Another question! My 62nd birthday is this August 15, and I am filing to receive my monthly Social Security benefit early. My original plan was to try to get closer to age 70, but you know how things are right now.

Anyway, I have to decide whether to have my monthly benefit amount (a) deposited directly to my Mexican bank account, or (b) loaded onto a Direct Express card. What are your thoughts?

I have heard that not all international banks are cool about receiving such direct deposits from the US, and that some require setting up a separate account for that purpose. But I have also heard that some people have had problems getting the Direct Express card to work internationally (although it is supposed to do so). Another conundrum!

Always maintain a USA bank account. If they need an address in USA then sign up for one of the many US mailing address services. In the long run it will make your life much easier.

Not the question that I asked! I do not have a US bank account and cannot obtain one. The Social Security Administration is capable to deposit my monthly benefit in the two ways that I mentioned, hence my question.

I applied for my Social Security benefit today and directed the payments to my Banorte account. A lot of people appear to have had very bad experiences with the US Government-approved Direct Express card.

Is Direct Express Card a visa/master debit card and if so will there be ATM or International fees if you use it outside of the US?

See # 3 at link below.

If yes, I would look into a Mex bank and see if SSI can be transferred to foreign bank acct to avoid fees.

Otherwise, Capital One 360 is a US bank with 100% online and their Mastercard Debit Card does not charge international ATM withdrawal/transaction fees. I recommend this route.

Yes, upon looking into it, the fees associated with the Direct Express card look bad, and the customer service looks unreliable.

He's applying for his SS (Social Security Retirement), not SSI, there's a big difference, but he really needs to have a US bank account anyway. You can receive Social Security Retirement living outside of the US, but not SSI. SSI is disability, and if you're found living outside the US, it gets cut off. There are ways around it, and lots of people do it, too. I knew someone that would withdraw most of his money after it was deposited every month, and just use the cash, so he wouldn't get cut off.

Stay away from direct deposit. New US rules prohibit joint or ATM or checking accounts. You most go yourself personally and draw cash from a teller window. If you become physically disabled, you will lose it all, or pay it to lawyers to get it for you.

Yeah, why don't you keep spreading THAT around. Great idea, bozo.

Why can't you get a bank account?
