in 2001, a mexican newspaper claimed the following had been mentioned by elena poniatowska:

"The Mexican writer Elena Poniatowska affirmed today that Mexico is presently recovering the territories lost in the past to the United States, thanks to emigration. ‘The people of the poor, the lice-ridden and the cucarachas are advancing in the United States, a country that wants to speak Spanish because 33.4 million Hispanics impose their culture."

do mexican citizens agree with her? i've been told that she is a very popular mexican author and has a very, very, very big fan base.

depends what you call ¨ popular ¨

identified with the left politics, but her opinion is one of the 105 million people of mexico.

But it is not a widespread opinion, little part of the mexican population taken into account what intellectuals says..

yes, some loonies do want that, but they aren't heard by the big majority of people, that's more a chicano thing or a radical extreme leftist thing a la lopez obrador, in Mexico we say dios los hace y ellos se juntan (god creates them and they become friends) Elena poniatowska is a friend of Lopez Obrador, the "Legitimate" president of Mexico or so he says, does this ring a bell?
