Can one get by without Spanish speaking skills for everyday activities? For example...shopping, banking, dining, etc?

I do too. You can pick up enough Spanish through "immersion" to order in a restaurant and haggle when you shop, if you need to. You'll be fine.

Yes, there are still plenty parts of Miami that you do not need to know Spanish.

Those areas as well as Coconut Grove , Pinecrest , Palmetto Bay , South Miami , Coconut Grove , Miami Shores and Aventura do not require knowledge of Spanish ... other areas such as West Kendall , Hialeah , Westchester , Miami Lakes , Little Havana , West Miami & anywhere along Flagler ... would be a nightmare with out some knowledge of Spanish in my opinion .

I'd say it's only an issue in some restaurants in West Kendall, otherwise not a big issue (though you will hear a lot of Spanish compared to some other parts of town). Otherwise agree with you. Places like Hialeah, Westchester, etc are places I just never have much need to find myself in.

A person does not need to know one single word of Spanish to get by here just fine.

I think the hysteria of needing to know Spanish is just that, hysteria.

Since their inception, most typical Cuban and Spanish restaurants all along Calle Ocho and Southwest; Esquina de Tejas (one of the first), Casa Juancho, La Carreta, Badia (now el Pub de la Calle Ocho), Sarussis, Islas Canarias, Pinareños, Versalles, Sergios and a lot etcetera have been receiving American customers (now many Europeans). Their menu is in Spanish and English.

Now, if you go to some bodega with their menu written in faltering Spanish in a blackboard, you might have problems there.
