The newest I saw are still back from September... ?

Well you can thank Mayor David Dermer for that after the county voters passed the 2002 transit tax. For some reason he opposed a connection to South Beach back then even though over 70% of the voters on the beach were in favor.
The Baylink portion of the Metrorail expansion program was at the top of the county's priority list yet with Derner opposing it the county had to shift focus.
A direct Metrorail link to the beach is vital to the success of the system especially now since the Airport extension currently under construction will open next year. A lot of tourists who get off at the Airport would use a direct Metrorail link to the beach instead of paying $50 for a taxi.

^^^Taxi Unions I guarantee had a huge pull in not expanding the rails to South Beach. At $30+ to get someone from the airport to the beach you can calculate the lose as people would rather pay $2.00 to get to South Beach via the Metrorail.

It's time for a voter referendum to make the MB link the first priority of Metrorail, and no other focus until that is complete. Nonsense like the north corridor took up too much time and focus off real priorities like the MB line. After that the FEC line should be focused on more... get Broward and PBC to really step up efforts on that along with MDC.

^ well I'm not sure how powerful taxi unions are in Miami to actually have the ability to derail the BayLink project. If this was NYC then maybe I could find that plausible but I remember hearing rumors about Dermer being somewhat afraid of what type of people a Metrorail extension to the beach might bring.

PS: Coconut a beach extension to Miami Beach might cost as much as $1 billion dollars alone. We can't do it without the FEDS kicking in 50% of the cost but I totally agree with you.

Most transit projects require federal contributions. I'm not sure how powerful they are either, but that's why a voter approved referendum is needed.

The excuse of bringing "undesirable" people is so ignorant on his part. He needs to take a look around and see there's not just upstanding citizens at the Beach these days.

^ well the Airport extension from the Earlington Heights station was done without one cent from the Feds and that project costs $524 million with the state paying $100 million of it & the local sales tax revenue paying for the rest of it. However a extension to the beach is going to cost so much either the state or the Feds are going to have to help.
