So i was biking on key biscayne today and saw some peacocks around. A local told me there used to be a Zoo in the area, until Hurricane Andrew damaged it. Anyone know about that zoo? Thanks!

it was the location of the old metro zoo. i've been meaning to check it out myself. the peacocks aren't probably from it though. those are all over various parts of miami.

also in pinecrest you have pinecrest gardens which is the old site of parrot jungle (now jungle island)
still need to check that out too.

Here is an old 8mm home movie of Miami back in 1956,where you will eventually see the Crandon Park Zoo at the 1:52 mark of the film.

I remember going to the old Crandon Park Zoo as a child. It was moved to the current location of Zoo Miami (formerly Miami Metro Zoo) in the 80's. Crandon was too small to keep up with the growing collection and was kind of run down; from what I remembered. The peacocks might be from there, but then again, alot of birds florish here once set loose. People have lost/let loose their exoctic "show" animals and you see them around.

Sorry, I ment to mention that the zoo was moved before Andrew. Zoo Miami (Miami Metro Zoo) actually took a pretty hard hit in it's current location during Andrew. It has recovered nicely and keeps growing in its current location, visit at Miami Metrozoo turns 30 on July 4th.

I always stop here when in miami. There is never anyone there in the winter at least. The grounds are beautifully kept, and they put out feed for the various birds that hang out there. Its also loaded with non native green and spiny tailed iguanas. Though not as many as before last winters cold, they used to be literally everywhere there.

Some of my pics...

I love how the little train has the American AND Cuban flag. Even back then there was a huge Cuban influence in the city. Love it ! Thanks for posting!

Good memories . . . I used to be a volunteer there and was good friends with the zoo vet and his family. At 13, I was actually given charge of feeding the petting zoo each day, following the various menus, making sure everybody got the right food. Even the rescued owl in the barn loft . . . live chicks!

I got my first major snakebite there, capturing an escaped European Water Snake, and was bitten by a sugar glider too. After hours my friend and I would ride the Shetland pony, Honeybear, around the grounds. We used to catch lizards and feed them to the Kookaburra.

And oh, the train!! I used to ride that train over and over again, same with the merry go round . . .

Crandon Park Zoo was a magical place with a rainbow that ended at a pot of gold, an awesome place to grow up!
