I've seen *more* homeless people and folks that look like they're strung out on the Beach than anywhere else. Except maybe along NE 2nd avenue in the mornings sleeping in the abandoned car dealerships.

Does anyone know how we got an elevated train or people mover in the first place? It seems so unlikely, but I want to support whatever groups/policies got them in place.

Metrorail (Miami) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There are different groups advocating for more mass transit, but the problem I've been finding is it's all too hodgepodge, and all over the place... there's little unity which is what we need.

Thanks for the link Coconut, figures that it got made in the 70s.

I spent a little more time looking around (I'm still getting up to speed on public transit issues here), and found this site with some (old) info on the streetcar project. I'll keep looking for info on that, it seems worth hearing more about.

There's mention of a transit advocacy group in some of the comments-- is that transitmiami.com? I'm willing to put some support into a group, even if there's hodgepodginess.

Also, probably old news, but somehow I missed this:
Republican Legislature to Scott: HSR Money is Not Yours To Reject | Transit Miami

We had a great Congressman named William Lehman in the 70s that pitched for funds for Metrorail & Metrover both which started construction in the 1980s.

The train to Miami Beach was called Baylink which was supposed to be lightrail that would have run down the middle of the MaCaurthur causeway & would have connected to Metrorail downtown. The mayor of Miami Beach Dermer didn't want it when the transit tax was approved in 2002 and Metro moved onto other projects.
As it stands now there is no rail link going into South Beach.

How ironic...the causeway bearing the former Congressman's name has no pedestrian access, despite dozens of Aventura high rises just across the Intracoastal and walking distance to the beach. Not to mention that many Sunny Isles Beach residents could presumably walk to Aventura Mall.
