I am applying to University of Miami and since Miami got ranked America's #1 fishing city by Field and Stream I was wondering how the fishing would be for a college student living in Coral Gables?

If you mean fishing within Coral Gables itself, you are looking at canals and small retention ponds. Unless you are planning to go out on a boat, there isn't much in the way of fishing in most of Miami-Dade besides canals and retention ponds.

A college student in Coral Gables, you will need to have a car or a friend with a car and/or boat to get to the fishing spots on the coast or out in the water. Like Miamiblue said, you really don't want to fish in the canals (unless its a catch and release thing) or ponds of Miami, as lots of people dump stuff into the canals and ponds so you don't want to eat those fish. People do, but its a no no in my family and circle of friends. So plan on taking a boat fishing or finding a place to fish from the shore on the ocean.

Like bodies. I seen quite a few pulled out over the last 15 years.
I do fish them occasionally, and catch peacock bass. I always throw them back though.

I would not mind catching a few peacocks in canals when I need a fix now and then, but can you catch snook off the beach or wade the flats for bonefish or take a kayak in the everglades for tarpon?

Since you will not be a resident you will need a permit for the snook. The snook I believe hang out in the mangroves. I wouldn't take a kayak out for Tarpon those fish are huge.
